The Opportunity:
The Principal Design Engineer /Project Manager will be client-facing and responsible for undertaking and overseeing significant civil and/or structural design work for rail infrastructure projects. This will involve leveraging your extensive technical expertise and the support of our global technical network. This role also offers a significant opportunity to develop and apply project management skills, contributing to the successful delivery of projects from inception to completion and fostering business growth in a relatively autonomous capacity within the Western Australian market.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and undertake detailed civil and/or structural design for a range of rail infrastructure projects, including but not limited to track alignment, drainage, earthworks, bridges, stations, and associated structures.
  • Provide technical leadership, guidance, and mentorship to junior engineers and design teams.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant Australian and New Zealand codes, standards (including AS/NZS, ARTC, PTA, and other relevant rail authority standards), and accreditation processes.
  • Oversee and manage the technical aspects of project delivery, ensuring quality, accuracy, and adherence to project timelines and budgets.
  • Act as a key client interface, building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, specifications, design drawings, and other project documentation.
  • Contribute to and lead design reviews, risk assessments, and value engineering exercises.
  • Implement and monitor rigorous quality control and assurance processes throughout the design lifecycle.
  • Utilise your developing project management skills to assist in project planning, scheduling, resource allocation, and progress monitoring.
  • Actively contribute to business development activities, including preparing proposals, identifying new project opportunities, and representing SYSTRA ANZ at industry events.
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, both locally and within SYSTRA's global network.

Stay abreast of emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in rail engineering and design.

Required Qualifications:

  • 8 to 15 years of post-graduate experience in civil and/or structural design within the infrastructure sector.
  • Chartered Engineer status (CPEng, NER or equivalent) or actively working towards achieving it is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrable local civil design experience within Australia or New Zealand, including a strong understanding and application of relevant codes, standards (e.g., AS/NZS, Austroads, relevant rail authority standards), and accreditation processes. Specific experience in Western Australia will be highly regarded.
  • Preferred: Significant experience in the design of rail infrastructure. Experience in road, utilities, or mining infrastructure projects will also be highly regarded.
  • Proven experience in a client-facing role with excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in quality control and assurance processes, ensuring design integrity and compliance.
  • Exposure to and aptitude for project management principles and practices. Candidates with formal project management qualifications (e.g., PMP, PRINCE2) or a strong desire to develop in this area are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience or a keen interest in business development, including tender preparation and client relationship management.
  • Proficiency in relevant design software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, 12d, CulvertMaster, HEC-RAS, SpaceGass, Strand7, or similar).
