Alice Springs is surrounded by spectacular national parks and is the centre of the world-renowned desert art movement. The lifestyle is laid back with an emphasis on outdoor activities. It is a friendly welcoming town in the unique central desert region of Australia, which provides a stimulating backdrop to an exciting professional life.
Alice Springs is a vibrant and beautiful community, giving you the opportunity to experience amazing cultures and landscapes, while developing your clinical practice in a busy, collegiate and well-supported environment.
The Central Australian Retrieval Service performs 800 fixed wing and road retrievals per year (28% critical care), ranging from pre-hospital primary missions to long distance critical care inter-hospital transfers. It covers a uniquely large area of around 1.6 million square kilometres – that is larger than Portugal, Spain, France, and Germany combined! The combination of pathology and geography presents a unique challenge.
We are a hospital-based retrieval service based out of Alice Springs, with close working relationships with Royal Flying Doctors Service RFDS and St John Ambulance. With a diverse department with consultants and trainees from ACEM, ACRRM, RACGP, CICM, ANZCA.
Alice Springs Hospital is a 183-bed teaching hospital affiliated with the Flinders University in South Australia and Charles Darwin University in Darwin. You will see some of the most interesting and complex medicine available in Australia. Rheumatic heart disease, bronchiectasis, chronic liver disease, end-stage renal failure, and diabetes are all prevalent. Overwhelming sepsis and trauma are among the more common reasons retrievals are activated.
Flexible working arrangements and leave arrangements are available. There are generous allowances and leave entitlements, see current NT Medical Officers Enterprise Agreement https://ocpe.nt.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/1260075/medical-officers-ntps-2022-2025-enterprise-agreement.PDF
