Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (CLCAC) is looking to urgently fill an exciting new opportunity for a passionate and committed professional to join our organisation on a fixed-term contract to provide parental leave cover until December 2025. Based in the thriving regional City of Cairns in Far North Queensland, surrounded by lush tropical rainforest and on the doorstep to the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest, this opportunity offers the perfect work-life balance, with travel to the lower Gulf of Carpentaria in outback Queensland.

About us:

CLCAC was established over 40 years ago in Burketown to represent the rights & interests of Traditional Owners. Our members are drawn from nine language groups whose traditional lands & waters are located in the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. As the recognised Native Title Service Body for the Southern Gulf of Carpentaria region, CLCAC performs statutory functions in accordance with the provisions of the Native Title Act 1993. An elected Board determines the Organisation’s priorities and monitors the progress of native title applications and oversees operational activities and general governance.

CLCAC supports native title, land & environment and PBC capacity & economic development programs over land and waters in the lower Gulf region and incorporating the townships of Moungibi (Burketown), Doomadgee, Normanton, Gregory and Gununa (Mornington Island).

The Opportunity:

As one of four Land and Environment Projects Officers you will provide support to the Indigenous Ranger Units based in the lower Gulf of Carpentaria. Specifically, you will provide scientific, technical and on ground support to the Ngumari Waanyi Rangers, working alongside the Ranger Coordinator to develop and implement strategies, programs and on ground projects for Indigenous land and sea management and community development.

You will support the continual development of the Ngumari Waanyi Rangers through the development of innovative strategies and programs to increase capacity and an understanding of scientific methodologies to independently undertake monitoring and evaluation of on-ground environmental management. You will also facilitate the integration of Traditional Ecological Knowledge with contemporary natural resource management practice and western science in on-ground activities, develop funding submissions, prepare program evaluation and milestone reports.

As the ideal applicant for this dynamic role, you will be someone with relevant tertiary level qualifications who can work both independently and within a team to achieve project outcomes. To be successful in this role you will have strong oral and written skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills and work well in a team environment. A demonstrated understanding of scientific principles, GIS mapping and data management skills are highly desirable. This position is based in Cairns with travel to the lower Gulf region, at times working remotely in the field.

Eligibility:

Essential

Tertiary level qualifications in Environmental Resource Management, Marine Biology, Environmental Science, Fire Ecology or equivalent

Considerable experience working in the field

Demonstrated experience and confidence in working with Aboriginal communities, working alongside small teams and/or coordinating on-ground natural and cultural resource management projects, preferably with Indigenous organisations in remote regions of Australia

Demonstrated understanding of contemporary natural resource management issues, together with an understanding of traditional knowledge and practices with the best available science and ensure they are effectively managed

High level computer literacy and proven experience using Microsoft suite to develop PowerPoint presentations, technical documents data analysis and reporting (where relevant provide detail of experience with specialised software, e.g., GIS

Experience in end-to-end grants from identifying and applying for suitable grants to the project management, delivery, monitoring and evaluation, reporting and acquittal of Government and community grants

Blue Card Positive Notice “Working with Children” (WCC) or the ability to obtain one.

Eligible to work in Australia for the full term of the contract

It is essential that you hold a valid Australian Driver’s License and are able to drive a manual driver’s licence. The ability to travel for up to two weeks at a time is also required

Desirable

Strong negotiation and community consultation skills, including the ability to work with an advisory group and as a member of a team

Experience working with Indigenous land managers, rangers and/or IPAs

Understanding of native title and land tenure and community governance

Technical or trade skills relevant to the ranger program (i.e. construction, fire and weed management, GIS, data collection technology and data management, cultural mapping, plant and animal identification, boating operations, small engine maintenance)

The offer:

The position is a fixed-term, full-time position to 19 December 2025 that may involve regular travel throughout the lower Gulf of Carpentaria region:

Salary Range: $82,394 to $98,280 per annum depending on qualifications and experience, plus 12% Super, paid pro-rata over the term of the contract

Generous Salary Sacrifice arrangements are available

Generous Leave entitlements including 5 weeks annual per annum, accrued pro-rata over the term of the contract
