ABOUT THE ROLE
The Convenor will be a key leader of the implementation of Aboriginal Family Led Decision Making (AFLDM) across the organisation. It is expected that this role will be 50% direct client work and overseeing the Coordination of the program and 50% other duties, such as overseeing the continuous quality improvement of the program and leading other key community initiatives and projects such as the facilitation of community groups and cultural healing activities.
The Convenor of the AFLDM process is required to facilitate meeting(s) to provide culturally led and family-based approaches guiding inclusive case planning and decision-making to address the care, safety and wellbeing of Aboriginal children who are involved in the Child Protection system.
AFLDM encourages family members, extended family, Elders, Significant others in the child’s life and where appropriate the child and/or young person, to meet and make decisions about their care, safety, and wellbeing. AFLDM convenors are independent from the Department of Communities which is important to the integrity of the process to engage with all stakeholders to support families to reach key decisions.
Convenors are required to have strong communication and engagement skills to empower families with meaningful opportunities to participate in the development of the case plan and/or making decisions about their child’s care, safety and wellbeing needs with compassion and empathy. Aboriginal cultural protocols and values will be central to the ways in which the convenor will work with families and other stakeholders by listening carefully in an open, fair, and respectful manner.
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
The ability to work in a manner consistent with Wungening Values.
Aboriginality is a genuine requirement for this position as defined under Section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984.
Sound knowledge of local Aboriginal culture and values, and the issues and needs of the local community.
Demonstrated ability to convene and mediate outcomes with groups and experience in facilitation and resolving conflict.
Demonstrated experience in culturally safe practice with the ability to work effectively with Aboriginal community and organizations, government departments and community service organizations.
Demonstrated ability to convene and mediate outcomes with groups with experience in facilitating and resolving conflict.
Demonstrated relevant child protection knowledge, Family and Domestic Violence (FDV) knowledge and an understanding of Collective and Cultural Attachment will also be held by the convenor.
Extensive knowledge of practice values and principles, and the guidelines that support AFLDM meetings.
High level written and verbal communication skills and well-developed interpersonal and negotiation skills with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships and communicate with Aboriginal people and internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to work flexible hours.
Demonstrable commitment to empowering and respecting children and young people.
Demonstrated ability to provide safe environments for children and young people and protect them from abuse and neglect.
