The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Director, Payroll and Workforce Operations to provide a critical role within People Safety Culture and Communications.

About the Business Unit

The Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) provides a range of government programs and services which focus on improving community safety, victim services, regulatory services and crime prevention, and building strong collaboration across the justice system.

The People, Safety, Culture and Communications (PSCC) group supports the department in workplace culture and people matters, including strategic communications, human resource policy and strategy; organisational culture and change; recruitment and retention; performance and development; pay, benefits and workforce reporting; safety and wellbeing; workplace relations; and employee conduct. PSCC promotes a culture to engage and develop the workforce, providing every person with the opportunity to unlock and achieve their potential.

The People Services branch oversees Payroll and Workforce Operations, HR Assist, Executive Service management and Recruitment Services across both frontline and non-frontline roles, in the delivery of HR operational outcomes.

About the Role

The Director Payroll and Workforce Operations is responsible for leading the Payroll Operations, HR Systems, Reporting and Projects team to ensure the integrity of the department's human resources information systems; the efficient and accurate administration of payroll; and that workforce data and reports add value to decision making.

The role is key in advising senior stakeholders on matters relating to payroll, HR information systems, and workforce data, while also representing People Safety Culture and Communications on relevant steering and management committees.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Lead and manage the department's payroll strategy and administration to ensure accurate and timely disbursement of pay to more than 15,000 employees across the department and portfolio agencies.
  • Lead and motivate the Payroll Operations Team to deliver consistent, accurate, and timely payroll outcomes.
  • Analyse, negotiate and manage complex improvement initiatives and change processes, particularly in resolving payroll discrepancies.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Extensive experience in leading end-to-end payroll management and administration within a large and complex environment.
  • Strong and current payroll-related legislation, including taxation, superannuation, leave entitlements, and enterprise agreements.
  • Demonstrated expertise in interpreting and applying industrial instruments and legislative frameworks to ensure compliant payroll outcomes.
  • Proven experience in the development, delivery and analysis of workforce data and reports.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office products, particularly Excel.

Qualifications/requirements

  • A relevant tertiary qualification is highly desirable.
