About the Organisation

The Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (DYHS) was established in 1974 and is the largest Aboriginal community-controlled health service provider in Western Australia, providing care to over 20,000 Aboriginal patients across four clinics in East Perth, Mirrabooka, Maddington and Midland.

Our staff enable the delivery of culturally responsive primary health services, focusing on prevention, early intervention, comprehensive care and care coordination including chronic disease management.

The Role

The primary responsibility of this role is to work as part of a team in the provision of health promotion within the Aboriginal community. This role provides support to the clinical staff in the development of health promotion and community engagement initiatives and the provision of appropriate resources. This role is Full-time Fixed Term until the 1st of October 2025.

Key Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

• Participating in community-wide education on a range of health and lifestyle issues including addressing the ongoing management of chronic diseases, nutrition, dietary

issues, sexual health, alcohol, physical activity and smoking, as per the objectives from funding sources.

• Team engagement with the local community to identify and understand key health issues and health promotion needs, including the inclusion of presentation and packaging

information in a culturally appropriate manner.

• Working with internal staff, community members and stakeholders to help develop and implement health promotion initiatives and community development strategies.

• Supporting and encouraging individuals, families and communities to undertake responsibility for their own health care needs using the principles underpinning health

promotion.

• Undertaking electronic record keeping of statistics to support performance measures required by funding organisations.

• Assisting in the planning and coordination of DYHSAC events in conjunction with the relevant teams and promote DYHSAC health calendar events and health promotion

topics utilising tools such as Noongar Radio.

• Assisting in undertaking research to identify priority areas for health promotion in DYHSAC and evaluation of existing health promotion initiatives to ensure the ongoing

delivery of effective and improved services.

• Complying with all policies and relevant procedures of DYHSAC, especially maintaining client confidentiality procedures and protocols.

• Undertaking Health Promotion training and participate in professional development, attend team meetings and performance reviews as appropriate.

We’re seeking candidates with the following:

1. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander pursuant to Section 50D of the Equal Opportunity Act.

2. This position prefers a female as, pursuant to Section 27 of the Equal Opportunity Act, a female is required to ensure culturally appropriate management of Aboriginal ‘women’s businesses.

3. Certificate IV in Aboriginal Health or a Certificate in Marketing, Promotions, Public Relations or Business.

4. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of a holistic approach to health service provision and its relevance to health promotion.

5. High level of verbal and written communication and presentation skills.

6. Well-developed interpersonal skills along with the experience and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team environment.

7. A willingness to undertake specialist training in Health Promotion.

8. Computer literacy skills.

9. Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Relations and Equal Employment Opportunity Legislation.

10. Current Working with Children Check, Current Western Australian Drivers Licence, Fully Covid-19 Vaccinated and a National Police Clearance that is not older than 6

months, with an acceptable outcome.

Desirable

• Demonstrated experience in the delivery of Health Promotion activities and programs.

About Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service

Princess Margaret Hospital held monthly clinics at the Aboriginal Advancement Council to provide immunisations and paediatric medical treatment. Princess Margaret Hospital supported the service as they recognised that our young Koolunga needed more follow up care. The monthly clinics increased from monthly to fortnightly and then weekly. Doctors and nurses from Princess Margaret Hospital also visited Allawah Grove Noongar Camp on the fringes of the metro area.

From this initial activity the seed was thus planted recognising that more health and medical support was desperately needed for all Aboriginal people not just the young. Princess Margaret Hospital should be recognised and acknowledged for the services they provided to Aboriginal families in the late 60's - early 70s.

The seed that was planted grew within the Noongar community and as a priority the next phase of the journey began. The word spread to the Noongar people and they formed the New Era Aboriginal Fellowship (NEAF) Committee - this Committee was inspirational in lobbying for contributions and community support to allow an independent, dedicated facility to be established where extended health care could be provided to those in need.
