The Opportunity
A PhD scholarship is now available to join our Modelling and Biostatistics team at Burnet!
You will undertake mathematical modelling projects to identify the impact and cost-effective of interventions to progress hepatitis C elimination in Australia and globally. The project will include epidemiological modelling components (using ordinary differential equations models to project epidemic outcomes) and economic modelling components (costing, health economic and resource optimisation analyses). The student will be embedded within a multi-disciplinary team, and outputs will be provided to governments, policy makers, and including international health agencies to influence decision-making around the world.
You will also:
- Develop and calibrate models of hepatitis C transmission, disease progressing and care cascade progression to different settings and population groups, using appropriate epidemiological, statistical and mathematical techniques.
- Undertake costing studies, and health economic evaluation of interventions.
- Communicate with epidemiologists, public health experts, social scientists and stakeholders about the approach and implications of modelling projects.
- Write academic publications and policy briefs and produce PowerPoint presentations.
- Undertake research projects with a high degree of autonomy.
This is a full-time candidature for a 3-year period and includes a stipend of $36,063 per year. While our head office is based in Melbourne, this PhD has an option to be conducted fully remotely from anywhere in Australia. Internationally based appointments are not possible.
Eligibility Requirements
This PhD scholarship is only open to Australian citizens or permanent residents, as eligibility to enroll in the relevant program requires this status.
Lets talk about you
The essential key selection criteria are:
- An undergraduate degree in modelling, statistics, physics, computer science, or a similar field OR an undergraduate degree in health sciences, biomedicine or a similar field plus experience with data analysis, computing or modelling.
- Experience with scientific computing and/or mathematical modelling (proficiency in Python (preferable), Matlab or similar, as well as experience in code management).
- Excellent attention to detail and demonstrated communication skills
Experience in one or more of the following is also preferable but not essential: epidemiology, communicable diseases, health costing and economics, or public health.

Burnet Institute brings together a highly diverse skill base, with more than 400 staff and students working across cutting-edge research and projects to address some of the most relevant global health issues. Institute-wide interdisciplinary health programs Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health, Disease Elimination, Behaviours and Health Risks, and Health Security, are at the heart of our daily decision making. Harnessing our international and local field presence, our laboratories, and our mixed development and research cultures drives a greater focus on the most relevant health issues and achieves a greater impact as a result.
Whilst our headquarters is in Melbourne, Australia, we also have offices in Papua New Guinea and Myanmar, and are actively involved in research and public health programs throughout Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and Africa.
