About the opportunity
The Senior Technical Officer will work within the School of Natural Sciences, primarily in Earth Sciences to provide technical support to teaching and research activities. The School of Natural Sciences trains the next generation of leaders in science, technology, and mathematics which are the future fundamental subjects of Australia. The Senior Technical Officer will provide technical support to field and laboratory-based practicals for undergraduate students, research projects, day-to-day operations and the activities of research laboratories.
The Senior Technical Officer is responsible for all matters relating to supporting the management and Safety, Health and Wellbeing (SHW) of teaching and research laboratories, including supporting the delivery of inductions, chemical management, facility maintenance and technical support for the School of Natural Sciences, primarily in Earth Sciences. The Senior Technical Officer may be required to provide cross-discipline technical support within the School.
What you’ll do:
- Act as a custodian for Earth Sciences teaching laboratories and workshops to provide a safe and orderly environment for staff and students to work in.
- Coordinate minor works and repairs to building facilities in consultation with Campus Services and ensure the relevant staff members in local areas are informed and advised of progress and issues arising.
- Support the discipline to achieve a SHW compliant workplace including, but not limited to, delivering SHW inductions to staff, students and visitors; maintaining induction records; ensuring safe work procedures are available and understood; performing workplace inspections and reviewing risk assessments.
- Manage the maintenance, storage, booking and distribution of geological field and teaching equipment.
- Work with the Operations Manager and SNS technical team to deliver consistent processes across the school.
- Manage the organisation of existing uncatalogued rock collections by liaising with a wide variety of staff members and students to ensure appropriate and efficient storage for future research.
- Assist in preparation, support, and supervision of special purpose events within Science and Engineering.
- Provide guidance on equipment for students and staff to conduct their work safely and effectively.
- Undertake and/or coordinate a program of maintenance of equipment and instruments and liaise with contractors where new installations of equipment or instrumentation occur to support a safe work environment.
What we’re looking for:
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in teaching and/or research and/or an industry environment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Experience in identifying building maintenance issues and liaising with relevant stakeholders to effectively resolve them.
- Ability to positively interact with students, staff, senior managers, and stakeholders external to the University.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills with the ability to successfully negotiate practical outcomes with a diverse range of stakeholders.
- Demonstrated well-developed written and oral communication skills, with particular emphasis on attention to detail and ability to interact effectively with a wide range of people.
- Competence in word processing (preferably Microsoft Word), spreadsheets (preferably Excel) and database operations.
- Experience with rock identification and/or cataloguing systems.
Salary details
Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $113,029 pro rata comprising base salary within the range of $89,091 to $96,606 plus 17% superannuation.
