The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Senior Project Officer to support key legal, coronial and systems change work within Justice Health. This rights-focussed work is critical in building stakeholders' understanding of and confidence in custodial health services, promoting accountability and driving continuous quality improvements and person-centred outcomes.

About the Business Unit

Justice Health is responsible for:

  • the delivery of primary health, primary mental health and specialist secondary mental health services for people in Victorian custodial facilities
  • managing relevant contractual arrangements, including overseeing the delivery of health services and the provision and maintenance of all medical records in an electronic medical record
  • facilitating the release of health information to community health care providers, legal representatives, and individuals
  • the design, procurement and delivery of new and innovative, evidenced-based health services that meet the needs of people of all ages and genders in custody.

About the Role

The Senior Project Officer - Legal and Coronial will support the Manager, Legal and Coronial to draft and coordinate responses to legal requests, including statements and affidavits, and responses to recommendations resulting from internal reviews, coronial proceedings and other inquiries to support system-wide improvements.

This work requires timely responses to various and numerous requests for information and advice, in a time pressured environment

Some of your duties will include:

  • Drafting and coordinating responses to legal requests, including statements and affidavits
  • Maintaining sound systems and processes for tracking and responding to legal requests and recommendations
  • Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Providing strategic advice, reports, briefings, presentations and correspondence on complex and sensitive matters.

About you

To be successful, you will have broad legal, legal policy or program development experience, ideally with a health or justice focus, along with strong stakeholder management skills and an understanding of government processes. You will be values-driven, with a passion for improving systems and person-centred outcomes. You will have excellent attention to detail and a strong capacity to write accurate and audience-appropriate documents and briefings, and be comfortable working under time pressure.

These skills should align with technical knowledge including:

  • Sound knowledge of or experience in Victorian government administrative processes and/or justice system processes
  • Previous experience in providing public sector policy or legal advice, and/or preparing materials to support legal and policy processes
  • Knowledge of current policy directions, research and issues within health, corrections or the criminal justice system more broadly, or the ability to understand these issues quickly.
  • Strong conceptual and analytical skills, with the ability to analyse complex operational, policy and legal issues to support Justice Health

Qualifications/requirements

  • A suitable tertiary qualification in public policy, health or law is desirable
