Who are we looking for?
We are seeking a Legal Counsel to join Office of the Vice-Chancellor and President, Chancellery Division.
The Legal Counsel will be part of a dynamic in-house legal team, more specifically the General Legal team. The General Legal team is led by the Director, Legal Services (General Legal) and is responsible for providing a wide range of in-house legal advice to officers of the University, including the Vice-Chancellor, University Registrar and other members of the senior executive. The primary focus of the role is on property and leasing.

The Office of the General Counsel is led by the General Counsel and is responsible for providing legal services to the University. It provides legal advice to the Vice-Chancellor and President, Senior Executive and Council. The portfolio also includes the Assurance and Audit office, which provides independent analysis, appraisals, recommendations, advice and information about QUT’s internal control systems, effectiveness, and performance quality.
What you need to succeed
- Admission as a Legal practitioner in the State of Queensland with an unrestricted practising certificate with at least 9 years post-admission legal experience (or equivalent).
- Demonstrated ability to draft a wide variety of complex legal documents, with particular emphasis on drafting of contracts and retail and commercial property agreements in a plain English drafting style.
- Demonstrated ability to provide practical advice on a variety of legal matters and demonstrated ability to handle and resolve complex legal issues.
- Highly developed interpersonal and negotiation skills to effectively communicate and liaise with clients within the University at all levels.
- Demonstrated written communication skills, including the ability to communicate practical legal advices to a diverse range of clients across the University.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritise tasks to manage competing deadlines and meet timeframes required for advices and agreements, with the proven ability to manage a high volume of work with broad direction and minimal supervision only.
- Demonstrated attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy with minimal supervision.
