Job description:
The Role:
Paediatric HMO/General Position - 2026
Come and join the Paediatric team at Northern Health, and gain fantastic exposure to Paediatric medicine in one of Melbourne's rapidly growing northern growth corridor. Northern Health provides healthcare to a population of over 580,000 people and in the Paediatric Department we care for general paediatric medical and neonatal patients.
The service includes:
- A very busy Paediatric Emergency Department that sees approximately 25,000 Paediatric patients per year with designated Paediatric emergency medicine consultant supervision. The Paediatric ED is accredited for PEM training and for acute training under RACP Advanced General Paediatric stream
- A Neonatal Unit with twenty one cots, which provides high dependency neonatal care with a level five capability. There is always a neonatologist covering, and we manage TPN, chest drainage and ROP screening. There are more than 3,600 infants born annually by the obstetric service
- A Children's Unit containing twenty two beds and caters for paediatric medical and paediatric surgical patients. Prior to COVID, there were 2 paediatric HDU beds located in the adult ICU
Northern Health is committed to medical education & training through the Teaching, Training & Research Precinct - a joint venture with The University of Melbourne, La Trobe University and the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments.
There are 5 general Paediatric consultants and four dual trained consultant neonatologists. Visiting specialists provide outpatient services in respiratory medicine, neurology, genetics, allergy and rheumatology. There is a chief registrar, seven paediatric registrars plus one senior resident and seven junior residents who provide 24 hours cover. The paediatric unit is an excellent environment to learn General Paediatrics and Neonatal Medicine.
Paediatric HMOs rotate through the Children's Unit and Neonatal Unit. HMOs are closely supervised by paediatric registrars, and their duties include day to day care of children, supervised attendance at deliveries to gain experience in neonatal resuscitation, assessment of children on referral from the Emergency Department and attendance at outpatient clinics. Most of the clinical work load is in acute paediatrics but there is plenty of opportunity to see patients with less acute problems in the outpatient clinics.
This 12 month HMO positions will be split of 6 months Paediatrics and 6 months General stream and vice versa. It is ideal for either General Practice Trainees, for the 6 month paediatric experience in completing the Sydney Child Health Program (formerly known as the Diploma in Child health), or those considering a career in Paediatrics.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Medical registration with the Medical Board of Australia under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
- Current National Police and Working with Children History Check
- Applicants must have satisfactorily completed their pre-registration (intern) year and HMO2 year; ie must be PGY3+.
- Demonstrate a commitment to Northern Health's values, a commitment to patient centred care and a commitment to your ongoing education
