Your role at St John of God Midland Public & Private Hospitals
The Aboriginal Engagement and Cultural Advisor has an important role in the care, welfare and support of Aboriginal patients and their families who access the Emergency Department at SJOG Midland Public and Private Hospitals.

In this role you will contribute to strategies and policy that ensure the delivery of a culturally sensitive and secure culture across all operations at SJG Midland Public and Private Hospitals and will be a resource to the organisation to enhance the cultural sensitivity, cultural security and cultural leadership while also providing medical liaison with specialists regarding lists and clinics undertaken in conjunction with community based referrers.

The Position

  • Understanding of the social and health issues affecting Aboriginal and/orTorres Strait Islander people.
  • Ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Identifies and works to address the cultural and spiritual needs of Aboriginal patients and their families.
  • Provides emotional, social and cultural support to Aboriginal patients and their families.
  • Liaises with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and service providers to address the specific needs of Aboriginal patients.
  • Interprets hospital and medical terminology for Aboriginal patients and their families to enhance understanding and compliance.
  • Liaises with relatives, caregivers and members of the community in relation to general patient enquiries.
  • Collaborates with key caregivers to ensure the needs of Aboriginal patients are identified and addressed.
  • Maintains appropriate resources for staff and patients relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health care.
  • Provides education to caregivers and assists the Learning and Development team.
  • Development and delivery of Indigenous community engagement strategies to support SJOG Midland Public and Private Hospitals in better engaging with Indigenous stakeholders.
  • Consultancy advice on the development of relevant policies and frameworks including reconciliation action plans and internal policy reviews related to supporting Indigenous employees in the workplace and positive Indigenous community relations that align to SJOG Mission Statement.
  • Builds collaborative partnerships with Aboriginal Service Providers to address the specific needs of Indigenous patients.
  • Promotes early intervention strategies and addresses access issues
  • Assist in the delivery of events which acknowledge Reconciliation, NAIDOC week and key cultural events throughout the year

Position Requirements
Pursuant to Section 50(d) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984, this position is designated for Aboriginal people. We are seeking an individual with demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and communities, and the ability to build strong, collaborative relationships. A high-level understanding of the key health issues and social determinants of health affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the local community is essential.

The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and negotiation skills, along with experience in both clinical and cultural consultation and education. The role requires the ability to prioritise tasks effectively while working within the parameters set by a Manager or Supervisor. Proficiency in computer applications, including the Microsoft Office suite, is also required.
