KJ is an innovative and award-winning Martu organisation that operates a variety of land management, cultural and social programs based out of Newman in Western Australia.
We are guided by Martu elders, who are some of the last Pujiman (desert-born people) in Australia with deep cultural and ecological knowledge. Martu are the traditional owners of a large tract of country spanning across three deserts and home to wild populations of some of Australia’s iconic fauna species.
At KJ, we value individuals who are determined to make a difference, willing to work hard, enjoy working within a team and want to work in partnership with Martu as they realise their aspirations to look after Country, culture, families and communities.
We are looking for a Cultural Field Officer to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with an Indigenous community on a variety of cultural projects that the community aspires to.
What you’ll be doing
As the Cultural Field Officer, you will work in the KJ’s Cultural Programs to assist Martu to achieve their aspiration of getting back on country, reconnect with their traditional culture, and pass on knowledge and culture to younger generations. Your work will include:
Working collaboratively with the Martu community to deliver on-country trips and activities that the community has identified as a cultural priority, including organising and participating on multi-night trips to remote desert country.
Contribute to the collection, cataloguing and accessibility of cultural knowledge and information for the Martu community, including oral history recording, film projects and resource creation.
Support Martu to access their cultural knowledge and information held within the Martu archive.
Does this sound like you?
You are willing and committed to understanding Martu culture, aspirations, and values.
You have prior experience in cultural and heritage documentation, activities and/or revitalisation projects
You can operate calmly in a cross-cultural environment where communication, understanding and life situations may be challenging.
You are capable of transferring skills to new working environments.
You have high standards in all your work and seek to develop your skills and the skills of people you work with.
You are innovative and a problem solver, with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
You are tolerant of ambiguity and able to respond positively to changing circumstances.
You are willing to travel and work across remote country – both in the desert communities and on fieldwork in arid country.
You have strong practical skills and are comfortable with working remotely on-country, including 4WDing and camping.
You have the capacity to learn from your successes as well as failures.
Physical Requirements
This is a physically demanding role and not for the faint-hearted. It will require loading and unloading gear for extended trips on country, changing tyres, short hikes and weather extremes.
We want to make sure that you will be up for the demands of the job so you will be required to undergo a medical examination before employment.
What we offer
A unique opportunity to work in a cross-cultural environment with Martu people on Country.
In addition to a competitive salary, we will cover the costs of your housing and utilities, provide you with tax-free salary packaging benefits, generous annual leave, flight benefits to Perth and access to professional development and in-house training.
How to apply
If you’re passionate about making a meaningful impact and excited by the opportunity to work closely with the Martu community, we’d love to hear from you! Please send your cover letter and current resume to [email protected].
Applications close 30th June 2025. For more details and to review the full position description, visit www.kj.org.au/work-with-us and discover how you can be part of this incredible journey.
