The Role

The Operational Support Division coordinates internal and external actions to ensure assigned forces are prepared for a wide range of operational tasks. It secures resources for near-term capability improvements and develops improved tactics, monitors personnel training, and assists Collins Class Submarine command elements in preparing for operational tasking. The division's aims are achieved through the Warfare, Tactical Development, and Intelligence sections.

This Tactics and Doctrine role includes:

  • Prioritising submarine tactical development, aligned with the Royal Australian Navy's Tactical Development Master Plan.
  • Conceiving, developing, trial planning and promulgation of tactical procedures for submarine command teams.
  • Managing Submarine Tactical Publications, ensuring currency and relevance.
  • Drafting and publishing Tactical Memoranda.
  • Implementing, managing, and conducting submarine tactical development exercises, including setting objectives, producing operation orders, and liaising with external authorities.
  • Reconstructing and replaying exercises for operational analysis.
  • Drafting and publishing post-exercise reports in 'Quick Look' and 'Long' formats.
  • Collating and managing Combat System Performance data.

About our Team

Our team manages submarine capabilities for the Fleet Commander, providing operational advice, overseeing training, ensuring compliance with standards, and coordinating support services. We also develop tactics, manage the budget, and handle personnel requirements.

Our team sets submarine research and development requirements and participates in project management boards. We promote a positive submarine force image and oversee minor capital acquisition aspects.

In essence, our team's functions align with the organisation's goals by ensuring submarine capability meets operational priorities and preparedness requirements.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate for the Tactics and Doctrine role will have a proven track record in operations analysis or research. They will bring expertise in planning, conducting, and analysing naval operations, demonstrating a deep understanding of tactical development processes. Strong problem-solving skills, innovative thinking, and the ability to work conceptually and analytically are essential.

The ideal candidate will also exhibit exceptional leadership and management abilities, capable of leading a multidisciplinary team in a dynamic, integrated environment. Outstanding communication skills, both written and oral, are a must, along with a demonstrated ability to develop productive working relationships.
