Consultant - Culture and Capability (Identified)
Wayarang
Posted 1 day ago
We welcome applications from people with all kinds of experience, however this role is an identified role for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander applicants only.
Wayarang isn’t just another agency…
We believe in the power of perspective to drive meaningful change. Our integrated approach helps create a more connected, inspired, and beautiful world — and we're on a mission to do things differently.
For our clients, that means combining the innovation of an agency with the rigour of a consultancy. We don’t believe in “tick-a-box” solutions or cookie-cutter frameworks. We work alongside communities to co-design, create, and deliver work that is meaningful, respectful, and impactful.
For our team, that means creating an environment where people can thrive — where cultural safety, flexibility, and purpose-led work are just part of the way we do things.
We are Indigenous-owned, female-led, and proudly diverse, with a team that includes First Nations people and culturally confident allies from all over the country. If you want to grow your impact, stretch your thinking, and do it in a way that feels good, you’ll love it here.
What we’re looking for…
As a Cultural Consultant at Wayarang, you’ll walk alongside us as we grow our work in cultural capability, co-design, and community-led solutions. You’ll work closely with our Partner – Culture and Capability to support a range of projects — from high-level government strategies to place-based, community-driven initiatives.
This role is perfect for someone who’s ready to step up and stretch. You’ll help keep projects moving, bring cultural care into the details, and help us show up with integrity in everything we do. Whether it’s supporting stakeholder engagement, writing cultural content, or translating community voices into powerful insights, you’ll be part of a small, purpose-led team doing meaningful work with mob at the centre.
What you’ll be doing…
Cultural insight and strategy
Support the development of initiatives, frameworks, and strategies grounded in community voice and cultural knowledges
Contribute to research and drafting of documents that bring clarity and impact from a cultural perspective
Help prepare content that reflects cultural protocol, tone, and mob ways of doing and being
Support our internal ways of working to make sure they’re always culturally safe and strengths-based
Co-design and engagement
Help plan and support co-design workshops, yarning sessions, and consultations
Document and synthesise community input into clear summaries and recommendations
Assist with stakeholder comms, logistics, and making sure people feel respected and included
Project support
Help manage timelines, deliverables, and coordination across projects
Support day-to-day project delivery alongside our Partner – Culture and Capability
Work with our broader team (comms, learning, design) to embed culture into everything we do
What you bring to the table…
Essential
A strong understanding of First Nations cultures, histories, and protocols
Proven experience supporting strategy, engagement, comms or project work related to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
Ability to work respectfully with stakeholders and communities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write culturally appropriate content
Strong organisational skills and a proactive, can-do attitude
Ability to work flexibly — both independently and as part of a team
Desirable (not essential)
Experience working in or with government, consultancy or community organisations
Understanding of co-design, participatory design or community-led approaches
Familiarity with First Nations evaluation, cultural frameworks, RAPs or Closing the Gap work
