Role Overview
This is a highly technical, senior-level role leading protection system design for HV substations supporting major data centre infrastructure. You'll drive protection and control engineering tasks across brownfields and greenfields substation projects, ensuring configuration files, settings, schematics, and fault analysis are executed at the highest quality.
This role is not a general project engineer role. It is pure protection and control - ideal for someone with deep technical acumen and the ability to work autonomously across the entire lifecycle of protection system design engineering and implementation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee a team of engineers on protection system design tasks
- Perform power system fault modelling, setting calculations, and QA review
- Develop and review relay configuration files (focus: Schweitzer & GE)
- Provide technical assurance, particularly for fault-level modelling and relay schemes
- Interface with site teams remotely (phone/Teams), where required
- Manage and review internal relay/drawing databases (training provided)
Required Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in Electrical utilities HV substation protection and control design (brownfield and greenfield)
- Familiarity with relay configuration platforms (Schweitzer, GE, Siemens, etc.)
- Competency with fault modelling software (e.g., PSSE or equivalent)
- Strong knowledge of Victorian regulatory standards and compliance frameworks
- Experience in zonal substations and terminal stations (not building services or Manufactuing machinery)
- Capable of quality assurance and team mentoring
- NER registration and sign-off capability mandatory
- Australian-recognised engineering qualification essential
Ideal Candidate Profile
- 8-15+ years' experience in protection and control (substation-focused)
- Has led or guided other engineers technically (even in a flat structure)
- Strong analytical thinker with attention to technical detail
- Confident communicator (written + verbal) and process-oriented
- Melbourne-based, 3 days in CBD office
- Values technical depth over project management or high-volume delivery
