The Role

Naval Construction Branch (NCB) is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual for the role of EL 1 Electronics Specialist and become a valuable addition to the team. This is a unique opportunity to work on a range of navy vessel projects, right at the waterfront in Henderson WA, where the ships are being constructed.

As an EL 1 Electronics Specialist, you will be responsible for assisting with pre-installation activities for all Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I) equipment, supporting installation activities, and providing assurance throughout the installation and integration process.

You may manage a small team and contribute to assess technical packages, reports, processes and product and equipment performance to meet specified requirements, provide recommendations for continuous improvement and implement corrective actions.

You will deliver continuity of technical assurance, working with uniformed staff in a team, using your experience in ship repair/maintenance activities to verify the ships are constructed in accordance with agreed approved domestic/international standards throughout the different phases of the build. You will be required to engage with contracted staff, identify stakeholders’ expectations and concerns as well as risks and issues, drafting briefs to inform management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and perform electronics and electrical technical activities, and associated tasks working to agreed priorities and outcomes providing necessary support and specialist advice in the Electronic and Electrical group while conducting shipbuilding assurance inspections and audits.
  • Plan surveillance and technical investigation activities, and coordinate SME’s to undertake activities for ships under construction.
  • Support C4I installation activities and provide assurance throughout the installation process, set to work and integration processes.
  • Responsible for and attend inspections related to verification/Quality Assurance and collaborate in the development of strategies leading to resolutions to meet positive outcomes whilst maintaining continuous tracking.
  • Provide regular reporting on ship construction, project, and shipyard status including management and reporting of tests and Non-Conformities (systems, installations, workmanship etc).
  • Conduct specialist reviews of technical reports, drawings etc.
  • Build and sustain positive relationships with team members within Defence, Prime contractors, suppliers, classification society and other regulatory bodies.
  • Lead audits of shipbuilding processes to improve project outcomes.

About our Team

Naval Construction Branch (NCB) is accountable for the assurance of ship construction, set-to work and transit of vessels constructed at the Osborne Naval Shipyard and Henderson precinct. We also maintain a smaller presence in Port Macquarie, NSW. NCB is furthering continuous naval shipbuilding and growing sovereign capability by overseeing the construction to ensure quality and standards are met, storing lessons learnt and developing standard shipbuilding procedures for construction.

NCB will oversee the construction of many different Navy vessels including Offshore Patrol Vessels, Hunter Class Frigates, Young Endeavour, Evolved Cape Class and Pacific Patrol Boats. Working at NCB will enable you to be at the grassroots of continuous naval shipbuilding, where you are part of a working shipyard, being able to see and contribute to the vessels delivered and used in service by Navy.

Our ideal candidate would be an experienced and qualified technician / technical specialist with a strong work ethic and demonstrated leadership behaviours.

Other core capabilities are:

  • Technical maritime electronics engineering background.
  • Considerable experience and technical expertise in Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence (C4I) equipment.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively, in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform technical electronics/electrical investigations and assessments that support the Defence materiel capability lifecycle, including evaluating equipment performance against specified requirements and providing recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Ability to apply technical knowledge and experience to identify risks.
  • Clear and effective communication skills and the ability to build relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage work, resources, prepare work area to meet expected outcomes.
