The Asia/Pacific Group on Money Laundering (APG) is an inter-governmental organisation founded in 1997. It consists of 41 active member jurisdictions working to implement the international standards against money laundering, terrorist financing and proliferation financing related to weapons of mass destruction (WMD). To achieve this goal, the APG works collaboratively with the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and other organisations, both domestic and international. The APG Secretariat supports APG members and serves as a focal point for APG activities in providing key services to APG members, the co-chairs and APG committees.
The core activities of the APG Secretariat include:
- Coordinating and leading mutual evaluations of APG members;
- Coordinating technical assistance and training with donors and providers;
- Providing expertise and research on money laundering, terrorist financing and financing the proliferation of WMD;
- Providing advice and information to, and linkages between, international and regional agencies (especially financial, legal and law enforcement agencies) on anti-money laundering (AML), counter terrorism financing (CFT) and counter proliferation financing (CPF);
- Organising and contributing to APG events and projects and attending and contributing to FATF events and projects; and
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with relevant international and regional organisations.
The APG Secretariat is hosted by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in Sydney and Canberra, Australia. This role is employed under the AFP’s employment framework.
What is the role?
The Engagement & Secretariat Services Directorate has been created within the APG Secretariat to provide high-level engagement, governance, and briefing support to APG members and observers and to ensure the APG Secretariat can actively shape the broader APG policy landscape.
What will you do?
The Secretariat will be responsible for:
- Providing proactive and professional support to international meetings and forums through setting agendas, managing meeting logistics and stakeholder engagement.
- Helping to shape critical papers and providing timely advice to key stakeholders across the APG and ensuring decision-making is made at the most appropriate level;
- Ensuring accountability and transparency in the actions of the APG and APG Secretariat by supporting effective communications on decisions to APG members and observers;
- Reviewing background documents and preparing information briefs;
- Maintaining APG corporate knowledge by updating information records, including for decisions made at key stakeholder meetings;
- Developing productive working relationships with other APG Secretariat members to coordinate APG responses to key issues; and
- Working closely with the APG Secretariat Executive and Engagement & Secretariat Services team to develop policy responses to emerging issues.
- This role will work as part of a small team and reports to the Deputy Director, Engagement & Secretariat Services.
- This role does not have any direct reports or financial delegations.
Essential Requirements
- Demonstrated and highly developed organisational and administration skills.
- Strong communication skills, with an emphasis on producing written work to a high standard.
- Demonstrated ability to work within a small team environment to achieve outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with stakeholders in a diverse environment.
- Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptive to short timeframes.
- Ability to organise and coordinate activities for a range of stakeholders, including an adaptive communication style to suit the audience.
- Fluency with the Microsoft Office Suite and web-based tools.
- Ability to obtain an NV1 security clearance.
Desirable Requirements
- Experience in an international setting, including in situations which can be culturally and politically sensitive.
- Tertiary qualifications or work experience related to governance, international relations or public policy.
- Ability to operate professionally and appropriately with international stakeholders in a multicultural and diplomatic context.
- Previous experience working in an agency with an international remit or in an AML/CFT role.
- Previous experience working in a Secretariat or policy roles.
- International travel may be required for this role. Successful applicants will need to pass a medical examination to undertake international travel.
Additional Information
- This role is an AFP Band 5 level
- This role can be located in either Sydney or Canberra and the succesful applicant must be located in either of these locations to complete the role
