Ideal candidate:
We are seeking a dedicated Aquaculture Technician to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the care and maintenance of our pearl oysters, with a strong focus on hatchery operations and microalgae culture to ensure optimal growth and health throughout their lifecycle. This position will be based at the Darwin Aquaculture Centre.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist in the breeding, spawning, and rearing of pearl oysters in the hatchery.
Cultivate and manage microalgae cultures to provide a nutritious food source for pearl oyster larvae.
Monitor and document the health, behaviour, and growth of pearl oysters
Perform regular water quality tests and adjust parameters as necessary.
Operate and maintain hatchery equipment, including tanks, and filtration systems.
Conduct routine maintenance and cleaning of hatchery and aquaculture systems.
Implement disease prevention methods and biosecurity protocols to protect the health of pearl oysters.
Assist with the deployment and transport of pearl oysters.
Train and supervise other staff in hatchery and aquaculture operations.
Qualifications:
Previous experience and/or training in aquaculture, with a focus on hatchery operations and microalgae culture.
Understanding of oyster biology, hatchery systems, and microalgae cultivation.
Ability to work in outdoor and aquatic environments.
Physical stamina and the ability to perform manual labour.
Excellent attention to detail and record-keeping skills.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Availability to work weekends.
Valid driver's license.
