Nursing Practice Development Unit
The Nursing Practice Development Unit (NPDU) endeavours to promote best possible contemporary quality nursing care of consumers requiring specialist forensic mental health care. The NPDU supports a culture of nursing practice development; uses evidence based approaches to care, promotes evaluation and research, as well as supports the development of clinical governance and accountability of nurses.
The NPDU has responsibility for the coordination, evaluation and ongoing development of the nursing graduate program, the provision of quality undergraduate nursing placements and other nursing programs including forensic education for registered nurses.
About the Role
To take a leadership role in the professional development, promotion and review of nursing practice at Forensicare. The CNC manages education and training programs, undertakes research and quality projects, and provides consultation and supervision.
Your primary functions will be, but not limited to
- Demonstration and sharing of expert professional knowledge and skills.
- Commitment to recognised standards and competencies of psychiatric nursing and the nursing code of ethics.
- Promotion of forensic psychiatry and psychiatric nursing through conference presentations, publications and participation in significant nursing committees and work groups.
- Provision of strategies that ensure cohesion of nursing staff development across Forensicare.
- Understanding and support of the role of consumer consultants.
- Demonstration of an active role in professional nursing organisations.
- Participation in mandatory safety training and any Forensicare specific mandatory training on an annual basis as defined in the Forensic Skills Recognition and Development policy.
- Contribution to group and individual supervision of graduate and postgraduate nurses.
- Provision of advocacy for nursing at Forensicare.
Skills and experience
- Current Authority to Practice from AHPRA as a Registered Nurse with a minimum of 5 years full time equivalent post registration experience in mental health nursing.
- Post graduate qualification in psychiatric/mental health nursing or have completed a specialist undergraduate psychiatric nursing program.
- Demonstrated commitment to mental health consumer recovery.
- Comprehensive knowledge of forensic mental health service delivery.
- A sound knowledge of the relevant legislation
- Demonstrated capacity in identifying and initiating service objectives.
- Demonstrated ability in change management
- Demonstrated leadership skills and expert skills in psychiatric nursing in a forensic mental health context.
- Highly developed written and verbal communication skills including the capacity to logically and clearly articulate complex issues and strategic directions.
- Proven experience with planning, coordinating and evaluating staff development programs.
- Well-developed teaching and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage self, tasks, resources and projects.
- Experience in research and ability to manage research and quality projects.
