Senior Risk Advisor

452 Flinders Street, Melbourne

2-year fixed term, full-time

Shape safer rail projects and help drive change in a workplace that values diverse perspectives and practical expertise.

About the Role

We're looking for an experienced and highly capable Senior Risk Advisor to join V/Line's Projects function, leading best-practice risk management across a major portfolio of works.

This is a critical role where you'll guide project and operational teams to identify, assess and manage risks across the lifecycle, embedding robust practices that meet both AS ISO 31000 and the Rail Safety National Law (RSNL), including SFAIRP (so far as is reasonably practicable).

As our Senior Risk Advisor, you'll:

  • Lead and implement consistent risk management practices across the Projects portfolio.
  • Conduct and facilitate risk assessments and reviews, identifying controls and helping build strong treatment plans.
  • Monitor operational risk activities, provide insights, and offer improvements that strengthen compliance and delivery confidence.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor to Project Managers and senior stakeholders.
  • Prepare and deliver risk reporting for the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and Executive Leadership Team (ELT).
  • Help shape the Risk Management Annual Plan in partnership with the Risk Manager and Quality, Compliance and Risk functions.
  • Plan and deliver risk training to uplift capability across the Group.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives on structure and clarity, and who can bring both the technical confidence and stakeholder presence to influence senior professionals across safety, engineering, delivery, and executive teams.

About You

We are seeking a senior professional with deep expertise in project and operational risk. We need someone who brings strong technical skills, understands the complexity of the rail environment, and can lead risk management from the front.

To be considered, you must meet most, or all, of the following key selection criteria:

  • At least 5 years of demonstrable risk management experience in rail, construction, or complex infrastructure projects.
  • Proven application of AS ISO 31000 Risk Management Guidelines and Rail Safety National Law (RSNL), including risk reduction so far as is reasonably practicable (SFAIRP).
  • Strong working knowledge of project risk management, including identifying risks, assessing controls, and implementing effective treatment plans across the project lifecycle.
  • Subject matter expertise in risk frameworks, methodologies, and reporting that align to AS ISO 310000, including experience preparing reports for senior leaders and executives.
  • Experience planning and facilitating risk assessments and workshops, and the ability to influence others to adopt sound risk practices.
  • An understanding of Safety in Design and how it integrates with project delivery and compliance obligations.
  • The ability to coach others and deliver structured training to uplift risk capability across project teams.
  • Familiarity with V/Line's internal frameworks (LEST-2, SAPR-9) or the capability to quickly gain proficiency.

Tertiary qualifications in risk, engineering, business, finance, or science are desirable.

Benefits

Salary for this 2-year fixed-term role is in the range from Clerk C5 (Base $106,204) to SO 1.3 (Base $129,759), in accordance with the V/Line Rail Operations and Administrative Employees Agreement 2023.

Benefits include a 4-week's annual leave, 17.5% leave loading, 11.5% employer-paid super, and free myki for metro & regional travel.
