  • A great opportunity to be part of Australia’s most trusted cancer ‘Not for Profit’ organisation and join a dedicated team delivering critical support programs.
  • Full time, ongoing position
  • Hybrid working environment combining working from home and in our brand-new CBD offices located at 200 Victoria Parade.

Since our establishment in 1936, Cancer Council Victoria has developed an international reputation for our innovative work in cancer research, prevention and support. As an independent, not-for-profit organisation, we play a leading role in reducing the impact of all cancers on all people.

About your opportunity

The Strategy and Support Division places people at the centre of everything we do. We work directly with clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and people impacted by cancer to reduce inequities and improve outcomes for all Victorians, now and into the future. As part of the Strategy and Support Division, you will be part of the Supportive Care Team which operates under the Cancer Information and Support Services Unit.

The aim of the Financial Counselling service is to reduce stress for cancer patients and their carers by providing support while working around the impact of cancer treatment. Our approach is holistic and person-focussed, with an emphasis on self-efficacy and self-determination.

We are seeking a full time Financial Counsellor to join the Strategy and Support Division. Reporting to the Financial Counselling Lead, your role is to:

  • Provide telephone-based financial counselling utilising a holistic, person-centred approach to people affected by cancer who are experiencing financial distress.
  • Enable and empower clients to make more informed decisions about their finances, self-advocate and regain a sense of control at what is usually a very distressing time in their life.
  • Provide information and support about all available resources for people affected by cancer to better manage their financial concerns arising from a cancer diagnosis. This includes the public and private application of health care in Victoria, services such as Centrelink, VPTAS and other relevant financial hardship programs.
  • Contribute to building an understanding of the costs of cancer for Victorians affected by cancer.
All about you

We are looking for someone who:

  • Flexible and adaptive to new ways of working in the financial counselling space
  • Interested in being among the first financial counsellors to specialise in cancer in Victoria
  • An excellent communicator with exceptional interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to empathise and to manage clients in stressful and vulnerable situations.
  • Has thorough knowledge of consumer law, client’s rights and entitlements, and resources for assisting people experiencing stress in managing their financial affairs
  • Has experience in the community sector and/or in the provision of legal or welfare information services
What we can offer you
