The Sporting Club Hotel is one of the latter. A much-loved meeting place in the heart of Brunswick, where birthdays are toasted out on the deck, casual hangs spill easily around the front bar, Tuesday nights mean parmas and familiar faces, Thursdays hum with community spirit as we raise a pot (and some funds) for local clubs and causes, and Sundays slow down with a proper roast shared among neighbours.

This is a venue with strong bones and a local soul. It doesn’t shout. It doesn’t need to. Its charm is in the details, the carefully pulled pint, the welcoming glance, the sense of time unfolding at just the right pace.

And now, as we look to expand the business over the next 18 months, we’re looking for someone who understands that to build something lasting, you start by tending to what’s already thriving.

About the Role
We are searching for an Assistant Venue Manager who can hold the day-to-day with grace and efficiency and cast a careful eye on the future. You’ll work closely with a well-established senior leadership team (including a supportive VM, operations, HR, and accounts, each with a shared commitment to steady growth and community connection).

This is not a role for someone chasing quick wins or grand gestures. It is for someone who can lead with quiet assurance, structure a strong team, and work collaboratively to future-proof the venue through clear systems, thoughtful service, and a genuine respect for what makes hospitality meaningful.

You’ll be present. On the floor, in the detail, guiding the rhythm of a service and mentoring those who are learning the ropes. And when the Venue Manager steps off-site, you’ll step up without fanfare, because that’s what good leadership looks like.

What You’ll Be Doing:

Leading shifts and operations across bar, dining, and events

Supporting and guiding team leads and Duty Managers

Contributing to a high-functioning, emotionally intelligent workplace culture

Working with the VM in managing rosters, wage performance, and weekly compliance

Driving smart, efficient systems that scale with the business

Overseeing ordering, stock management, and supplier relationships

Supporting hiring, training, and development of your team

Working closely with the VM, accounts, and operations to ensure commercial health and future growth

What You Bring:

Demonstrated hospitality leadership in fast-paced, multi-faceted venues

A calm, grounded presence, especially under pressure

A passion for developing people holistically, building confidence, care, and capability beyond the basics, across every aspect of service

Financial fluency and a strategic mindset for growth

A love of service, not just doing it, but doing it well

A strong handle on licensing, RSA, compliance and daily operations

Food Safety Supervisor certificate and current RSA

WSET Level 2 minimum, Level 3 preferred

What We Offer:

A full-time position under the Publican.Co Enterprise Agreement 2023/2024

$78,000–$85,000 salary + superannuation
