About the Opportunity

A well-established and expanding construction company based in Luscombe, QLD, is seeking an experienced Financial Controller / Accountant to lead and manage the finance function. With annual revenues between $5M and $10M, this role offers a strategic leadership opportunity to drive financial performance and support business growth within both residential and commercial construction sectors.

Role Overview

Reporting directly to the Director, the Financial Controller will own all aspects of financial management, including budgeting, reporting, compliance, and strategic planning. This is a hands-on leadership position requiring a commercially astute professional comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment and familiar with the financial complexities of construction and project-based businesses.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee daily financial operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, reconciliations, BAS, superannuation, and cash flow management

Review and process supplier invoices and statements promptly

Manage monthly cash flow and payment schedules

Prepare and lodge monthly project claims; sign statutory declarations as required

Reconcile and submit all statutory reporting accurately and on time

Control stock management and work-in-progress (WIP) reporting

Monitor project profitability through job costing and contract reviews

Produce timely and accurate financial reports (monthly, quarterly, annual)

Lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial performance analysis

Ensure compliance with statutory, tax, and regulatory requirements

Provide commercial insights to support operational decision-making

Maintain and improve internal financial controls and accounting procedures

Manage relationships with external accountants, auditors, and financial institutions

Supervise and mentor junior accounting personnel or external bookkeeping resources

Candidate Profile

Minimum 3–5 years in a senior finance or accounting role within the construction or project-based industries

Proven expertise with Xero accounting software, including project management modules

Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Experience with construction industry software such as Payapps, Procore, Jobpac, Cheops or similar ERP systems highly desirable

Solid understanding of Australian accounting standards, tax legislation, and compliance obligations

Justice of the Peace, Commissioner of Declarations, or eligibility to register (required for statutory declarations)

Excellent communication, analytical, and organisational skills

Ability to operate both strategically and with hands-on execution

Resides within 30 minutes of Luscombe, QLD

Qualifications

Relevant tertiary qualification in Accounting, Finance or equivalent

CPA or CA accreditation is highly preferred
