About the Opportunity
SWSLHD has a well established team of Aboriginal Mental Health workers and clinicians in different teams across the lands of the Darug, Dharawal and Gundungurra peoples. Our Aboriginal Mental Health workforce are supported by an Aboriginal Mental Health Coordinator and a district wide Aboriginal Health Unit.

The successful candidate will be working with the Tharwal Aboriginal Medical Service’s Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) Team.

Tharawal AMS is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO), independent of the Government, Primary Health Networks (PHNs) and independent of but aligned in principle to other AMSs across Australia. Based in Airds NSW, Tharawal celebrated its 40th year of operation in 2023 and provides healthcare, social and cultural support services to Indigenous Australians across South West Sydney.

This position is vital to our team as will support improved service access, integration and coordination between Tharwal and the Community Mental Health Emergency Team (COMHET). The position is based in Airds, with some days to be worked from Campbelltown with COMHET.

What You'll be Doing
The primary role of this position is to provide culturally responsive, recovery orientated and evidence based assessment and interventions to clients of Tharawal Aboriginal Medical Service (Tharawal) who identify as Aboriginal, and their families. The position will be linked with the Campbelltown Community Mental Health Emergency Team (CoHMET) but based at Tharawal. The position will support service integration and coordination between the Community Mental Health Service and Tharawal to enable consumers to navigate seamlessly when accessing care from both services.

As a senior clinician this role will provide leadership, mentorship and supervision (where appropriate) to the Tharawal Social and Emotional Wellbeing Team, to ensure the delivery of evidence-based, strengths focused, recovery orientated assessment and treatment that is culturally responsive within a multi-disciplinary team. The position will carry a clinical caseload appropriate to the needs of the service and undertake mental health promotion and community liaison tasks in support of the development of culturally responsive mental health services within SWSLHD and Tharawal.

SWSLHD Community Mental Health Services provide comprehensive, community-based mental health care across South Western Sydney.

These services cater to different age groups, including children, adolescents, adults, and older persons, ensuring specialised care throughout various life stages. The multidisciplinary teams offer a range of supports, including mental health assessments, crisis intervention, care coordination, and therapy. They work closely with inpatient services, GPs, and other community organisations to provide holistic care.

  4. Demonstrated understanding of Aboriginal perspectives regarding health and social and emotional wellbeing and how this understanding informs the way that care is provided.
  5. Demonstrated skills in clinical leadership and clinical supervision within a multidisciplinary treatment setting.
  6. Experience and or knowledge of partnering with external agencies or services to deliver clinical services
  7. Demonstrated experience and clinical skills in working with Aboriginal consumers and their families.
  8. Professional interpersonal skills, clinical problem solving skills and personal resilience and ability to work in independently and in consultation with the multidisciplinary team.
  9. Demonstrated ability and competency in using computer based programs for clinical documentation, data entry, collection and reporting.
  10. Demonstrated leadership in the planning, implementation and evaluation of local service delivery incorporating the quality improvement process.
  11. Applicants must possess an Australian C-Class driver's license (including P1 or P2). Those who hold a C class license (P1 or P2 included) from a state other than NSW must obtain a NSW C class (P1 or P2 included) license within three months of appointment. Learner's licenses are not permitted.
