About This Opportunity
We are seeking a motivated Technical Assistant to join our team in supporting laboratory-based teaching activities within the School. Working under general direction, you will contribute to the smooth running of practical classes by maintaining clean and well-organised teaching laboratories, managing waste disposal, and ensuring the consistent supply of consumables and clean glassware.
You will also support operations in the School's central glassware and autoclaving facility. While core tasks are outlined, flexibility is required to adapt to daily operational needs and priorities.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Maintain good communication with the Scientific Officers and Laboratory Coordinators in weekly planning meetings and on a daily basis.
- Carry out waste disposal from the teaching laboratories daily including preparation of clinical waste for autoclaving.
- Conduct regular checks to ensure that the preparation and teaching laboratories are supplied with general consumables and other items for staff and student use and replenish from consumables in storage including filling and autoclaving pipette tip boxes.
- Monitor general consumables in storage and notify the Scientific Officers when stocks are running low.
- Assist Scientific Officers to receive/collect orders. Unpack, distribute and put into storage. Dispose of packaging.
- Collect, wash, dry and re-stock glassware for preparation and teaching laboratories.
- Prior to the start of semester, carry out a general clean of the undergraduate teaching laboratories with particular emphasis on cleaning benches, sinks and whiteboards.
- Organize the supply of tutor and student lab coats. Arrange for laundering of lab coats.

About You
- Certificate III in Laboratory Skills or completion of grade 12 plus workplace experience or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Experience in scientific laboratory support duties, safety and compliance.
- Working knowledge of scientific glassware washing and sterilisation procedures.
- Experience in the general operation of autoclaves
- Self-motivated and ability to prioritise workload; to work with a high level of adaptability, flexibility and cooperation as part of a team.
- Ability to follow set procedures and maintain high standards
- Computer and database literacy skills including the Microsoft Office suite.
- Inter-personal and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and a commitment to excellent customer service.
- Excellent time management and organization, including prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.
- Strong focus on customer service.
- Current first aid qualification or willingness to undertake first aid training.
The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia.
