About the Barkly Region
The Barkly Region covers more than 320,000 km2 stretching from the old Telegraph Station at Barrow Creek in the south to the historical droving township of Newcastle Waters in the north. Located approximately 1000km south of Darwin and 500km north of Alice Springs. Tennant Creek has a population of 3,252 and is the largest town in the region.
Living in Alpurrurulam
Located in the eastern Barkly Region, Alpurrurulam (also known as Lake Nash) is a remote Aboriginal community with deep cultural and historical significance. It sits near the Georgina River, close to the Queensland border, and is at the end of the Sandover Highway, which can become impassable during the wet season. Explore the local cultural at Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre, spend the day kayaking at Tingkkarli (Lake Mary Ann), or take a walk around the peculiar rock formations of Karlu Karlu (Devils Marbles) or use your leisure time from work and take a 4WD adventure into the Davenport Ranges. There is lots to discover in the Barkly Region. With some of the most beautiful landscapes in Australia and easy access to several of Australia’s tourism icons.

As a thriving community, Alpurrurulam offers essential services, including the Barkly Regional Council Service Centre, Aged Care facilities, Night Patrol, Youth, Sport and Recreation programs, Centrelink, a Post Office, and the Warte Alparayetye community-owned store. The community is also home to Alpurrurulam Community School and Rainbow Gateway, a community development program. For sports enthusiasts, Lake Nash AFC competes in the AFL Mount Isa league, with the Young Guns (men’s team) and the Giants (women’s team) proudly representing the town.

About the Role
Barkly Regional Council is seeking a motivated and community-focused Council Services Manager to lead and manage operations in Alpurrurulam. This position is responsible for delivering high-quality Council services, overseeing municipal programs, and engaging with the local community to ensure a well-maintained, healthy, and vibrant township.
As the Council Services Manager, you’ll supervise a team of community and program staff, ensure effective delivery of essential services, and provide administrative and governance support to the Local Authority. This is a frontline leadership position where your impact will be felt every day.
The Essentials
• Diploma in Leadership and Management and/or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
• An understanding of Human Resource Management and policies relevant to the workplace.
• Demonstrated ability to successfully implement Municipal Services and programs in communities with a range of different cultural backgrounds.
• Understanding, or the ability to quickly interpret, relevant Local Government and other relevant legislation, and policies.
• Capabilities to lead, develop, coach, mentor, and multi-disciplined, cohesive, high-performance team capable of exceeding.
• Driver’s Licence.
• Current National Police Criminal History Check.
• Current Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card – Northern Territory).
• CPCWHS1001 Work Safely in the Construction Industry (White Card).
About You
• You have strong leadership and people management skills, ideally in a remote or regional setting.
• You have excellent communication, stakeholder engagement and conflict resolution skills.
• You are willing and have the ability to live and work in Alpurrurulam, a remote community in the Northern Territory.
The Finer Details
• Full-Time Permanent position paying Above Award Level of the Barkly Regional Council Enterprise Agreement 2023.
• Annual Salary of $120,459.76 per annum ($4,633.07 gross per fortnight).
• 11.5% Superannuation.
• Annual Leave of 6 weeks paid with 17.5% Leave Loading.
