THE ROLE
Reporting to the Executive Director, Aboriginal Initiatives, Quality Improvement and Oversight - Children and Families, the Director, Aboriginal Initiatives, Children and Family Programs is responsible for the development of strategic policy and programs associated with Victoria's Child Protection, Care Services, Child and Family Services as they relate to Aboriginal families, children and young people.
The Director develops and drives the delivery of culturally inclusive strategies that are innovative, evidence-informed and reflective of best practice. The Director will lead the division's engagement with Aboriginal sector stakeholders and priority governance including the Aboriginal Children's Forum.
The Director will lead a strong interface with multiple divisions and various government departments, oversight bodies and funded agencies in order to develop and deliver the Victorian Government's commitment to Aboriginal self-determination and self-management, as outlined in the vision of Wungurilwil Gapgapduir - the Aboriginal Children and Families Agreement and reflected in commitments made to the Aboriginal Children's Forum.
This position works in partnership with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) from a position of deep respect, and involves sensitive stakeholder management skills, strong risk management approaches and political acumen.
ACCOUNTABILITIES INCLUDE
- Provide high level authoritative advice on complex policy issues to the Minister, the Secretary and senior leadership across the department on significant issues relevant to the Children and Families portfolio.
- Lead the development of effective consultative mechanisms with stakeholders, including the community services sector and government, to ensure stakeholders' views including those of Aboriginal children, young people and families are canvassed and reflected in the development of policy strategies, programs and initiatives that advance Aboriginal self-determination.
- Collaborate with other policy areas within the department to design policy and program initiatives for Aboriginal children and young people.
