THE ROLE

Reporting to the Executive Director, Aboriginal Initiatives, Quality Improvement and Oversight - Children and Families, the Director, Aboriginal Initiatives, Children and Family Reform is responsible for the development of strategic policy and program reform associated with Victoria's Child Protection, Care Services, Child and Family Services as they relate to Aboriginal families, children and young people.

The Director will lead the design of policy, strategy, legislation and programs ensuring it is responsive to the needs of vulnerable Aboriginal children and families and is suitable for state-wide implementation. It will respond to relevant findings of the Yoorrook Justice Commission, and be responsible for the design and implementation of recommendations that support Child Protection and Family Services reform

This position involves sensitive stakeholder management skills, strong risk management approaches and political acumen.

ACCOUNTABILITIES INCLUDE

  1. Provide high level authoritative advice on complex policy issues to the Minister, the Secretary and senior leadership across the department on significant issues relevant to the Children and Families portfolio.
  2. Lead the development of effective consultative mechanisms with stakeholders, including the community services sector and government, to ensure stakeholders' views including those of Aboriginal children, young people and families are canvassed and reflected in the development of policy strategies, programs and initiatives that advance Aboriginal self-determination.
  3. Collaborate with other policy areas within the department to design policy and program initiatives for Aboriginal children and young people.
