The Specialist Protective Command (SPC) within the AFP is a hybrid (Specialised/Operational) Command within the AFP and is responsible for safeguarding Australians and Australian interests through the delivery and coordination of protective security and aviation policing.
The Business Strategy and Governance Section (BSGS) is customer-focused, providing an embedded strategic and corporate enabling service for SPC. The BSGS provides a single-entry point for enquiries and information on SPC activities including governance, national strategy, workforce management and planning, procurement and logistics support across SPC.
Role Summary
The National Coordination and Support Team (NCST), within BSGS, supports SPC by working with the AFP regional commands and the broader SPC to ensure key stakeholders within the AFP maintain a shared level of situational awareness of threats, significant activity, and AFP operational responses relating to the protection of Commonwealth Interests.
NCST is responsible for oversight of SPC governance, responding to general enquiries, and short-term SPC policy initiatives. As a team we also provide information and records management functions, administration support and advice, support stakeholder engagement, and contribute to strategic planning.
AFP appointees contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.
What will you do?
Duties & Responsibilities
As a Coordination & Strategy Officer in NCST, you will:
- be a conduit for advice, support and information queries related to NCST, BSGS and SPC matters, ensuring contemporary, centralised information holdings.
- monitor team inboxes, triage and action requests in a timely manner.
- identify and engage with key stakeholders to coordinate advice and responses to legislative reforms, media enquiries, freedom of information (FOI) requests, Ministerial submissions, and Parliamentary inquiries.
- prepare briefs and talking points for SPC and the AFP executive.
- provide secretariat support for relevant committees, including but not limited to organising meetings, compiling agendas, preparing papers and drafting minutes.
- maintain situational awareness of current threats, trends, and topics relevant to SPC.
Throughout BSGS there are development opportunities and cross-skilling available across the BSGS teams such as workforce management, logistics, procurement and executive support with training and support provided. NCST members may also provide surge capacity to other teams within SPC to support operational outcomes.
Essential Requirements
Our ideal candidate must have the following experience and attributes:
- Be an Australian Citizen at the time of application.
- Hold a Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) Security Clearance or have the ability to obtain one.
- Demonstrated experience in drafting and compiling high-level corporate-focused content, briefs and talking points on behalf of senior executive, with attention to detail.
- Proven ability and desire to work in a fast pace, adaptive environment that supports an agile operational workplace.
- Demonstrated strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to form productive working relationships.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and respond to urgent and ad-hoc requests.
Desirable Requirements
- Experience within the federal government, specifically performing coordination and/or support roles; and
- Experience providing high level administrative support and advice to senior executive.

- This role is based in Barton, Canberra. Only candidates willing to work in Canberra should apply. Please note the AFP does not pay for relocation costs.
- This position is an AFP Band level 5.
