About the Role
The Senior Scientific Officer will play a key leadership role in managing the day-to-day operations of scientific and administrative teams supporting the Rapid Applied Research Translation (RART) program for infectious diseases. Working closely with the Program Lead and Scientific Manager of the First Nations Molecular Point-of-Care Testing Program, this role will oversee the delivery of innovative demonstration projects and research activities.

Responsibilities include scientific oversight, quality management, and the development of flexible training resources to support health and community workers-particularly in regional and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful research and help drive health improvements in First Nations communities.

International Centre for Point-of-Care Testing
The International Centre for Point-of-Care Testing work collaboratively with national and international partners to improve health care, access to pathology testing, and improve health outcomes.

The Centre works to translate the national research and teaching expertise in the field of community based POCT to other national and international audiences, and as a result, build the capacity of rural and remote communities globally (particularly Indigenous communities) to develop solutions to improve both health service delivery and patient outcomes in their communities.

About the Flinders Health and Medical Research Building
At the beginning of 2022, construction commenced on the $255 million Flinders Health and Medical Research Building (FHMRB). Opening in early 2024, the FHMRB enables researchers, practitioners and industry partners to work together more closely than ever before, creating a hub of collaboration within southern Adelaide's own biomedical research precinct. Located adjacent to Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders Private Hospital, FHMRB is the focal point of research informed by genuine patient need, positioned to make an immediate improvement to people's health and wellbeing.

About You
To be successful in this role you will demonstrate:

  • A degree in a relevant Health or Medical Science discipline, complemented by extensive experience in pathology testing delivery and research.
  • Proven expertise and comprehensive knowledge in routine microbial pathology testing, including familiarity with applicable national and international standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong experience in managing and delivering molecular-based point-of-care testing, with specific proficiency in the use of GeneXpert systems.
  • Highly developed project management skills, with the ability to work independently, set priorities, make informed decisions, and deliver outcomes within established timelines and milestones.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and collaborate effectively with culturally diverse stakeholders, industry partners, and research participants-particularly with an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and other priority populations affected by infectious diseases.
