About the role
The role of a Payroll Officer is essential for ensuring that employees are paid accurately and on time while complying with complex legal and regulatory requirements. The payroll officer manages the entire payroll process, which includes collecting and verifying employee data, calculating wages, taxes, and deductions, and generating payslips and reports. They serve as the primary point of contact for employee payroll inquiries, addressing issues and providing clear explanations. Additionally, Payroll Officers maintain accurate payroll records and ensure compliance with relevant Australian legislation. They often collaborate closely with the People & Culture (P&C) and finance departments.
Ideally, you’re someone who…is detail-oriented and highly organised, with a strong understanding of Australian payroll processes and legislation. You will posses a proven track record of accurately processing payroll in a timely manner, ideally with 3-5 years of relevant experience.
You will be proficient in the use of common payroll software and have excellent data entry and analytical skills. You will hold a relevant qualification, such as a Certificate IV in Payroll Administration or a related field, demonstrating a solid foundation in payroll principles.
Beyond technical skills, you will exhibit strong communication and interpersonal abilities. You will be capable of effectively addressing employee queries and collaborating with HR and finance teams. You will be proactive problem-solvers, able to identify and resolve payroll discrepancies efficiently.
Crucially, the ideal Payroll Officer would will demonstrate a high level of integrity and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality when handling sensitive employee financial information. They would be adaptable and eager to stay updated on changes in payroll legislation and best practices. In essence, they would be a reliable, meticulous, and communicative professional dedicated to ensuring accurate and compliant payroll operations.
Main duties and responsibilities
Process accurate and timely payroll, including data input (hires, terminations, timesheets, leave, adjustments, Deductions).
Manage timesheet accuracy and resolve discrepancies.
Calculate wages, salaries, taxes (PAYG), superannuation, and other deductions.
Process statutory payments (super, payroll tax) and prepare reports.
Generate payslips and various payroll reports.
Maintain organized payroll records and documentation.
Stay updated on and comply with payroll legislation and company policies.
Assist with payroll audits.
Manage end-of-year payroll processes (payment summaries, reconciliation).
Address employee payroll queries and resolve issues.
Liaise with HR and finance on relevant matters.
System & Process Management:
Administer the payroll system and ensure data integrity.
Identify and implement process improvements.
Troubleshoot payroll system issues.
Manage leave balances.
Process termination payments.
Reconcile payroll accounts.
Provide payroll data for budgeting
Assisting and supporting accounts payable as required
Experience
2-5 years of relevant experience in payroll processing, understanding payroll cycles, and applying relevant legislation.
Experience with payroll software: Familiarity with popular payroll systems used in Australia.
Data entry and attention to detail: Proven experience in accurately inputting and managing data is crucial due to the detail-oriented nature of payroll.
Basic understanding of accounting principles: Some understanding of how payroll integrates with accounting functions can be beneficial.
Experience in handling employee queries: Dealing with payroll-related questions from employees professionally and efficiently is often required.
Desirable
Experience with Employment Hero and Xero software
Experience and understanding of the construction industry and relevant awards.
Qualifications
Certificate III or IV in Accounts Administration or Bookkeeping or Certificate IV in Payroll or Diploma of Payroll Services
Employment type
Part-time 21 hours a week, ongoing role with the potential of stepping into a full-time role.
Hours/days
Ordinarily, you will be expected to work Office hours at the head office, Tuesday to Thursday.
