The Research Scientist - Grapevine Virology will provide scientific leadership to Agriculture Victoria Research's (AVR) virology research activities for the national ‘Best practice sampling and virus detection in Australian grapevine propagation assets' project, which is co-funded by AVR and Wine Australia. The role underpins the Agriculture Victoria strategy to sustainably maximise productivity and while protecting industry biosecurity. The research scientist will develop and update surveillance, sampling and diagnostics strategies for viruses in grapevine propagation assets and production vineyards in Australia, to improve resilience of the Australian grapevine propagation and fruit industries against impacts from grapevine viruses and associated diseases. The Research Scientist will lead the project and co-ordinate activities between AVR, industry and interstate research and industry project partners. They will liaise with and build strong connections to a range of government and industry stakeholders to ensure communication key results and uptake of new methodologies by scientists, diagnosticians and industry. The successful applicant will be based at AgriBio, Bundoora and will work under the guidance of and report to the Research Leader - Microbiology. They will be part of and collaborate with the Microbiology team at AgriBio to deliver project outcomes via Agriculture Victoria's Crop Health Services and Crop Hygiene for the benefit of the Australian viticulture industry.

The candidate should have experience in virology, molecular diagnostics tools for detection of pathogens including PCR and high throughput sequencing. Knowledge in statistical methodology to support the development of sampling strategies is desirable. They must have good leadership skills, an excellent track record in applied microbiology research, and a publication history in peer-reviewed scientific journals. They will have proven written and verbal communication skills to ensure research outcomes are delivered to key stakeholders such as growers, industry representatives, and funding bodies.

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications

  • A Post-graduate (PhD) degree in Agricultural Science, Science or an equivalent science qualification is mandatory.
  • Desirable: at least one year of prior research work experience in plant virology in reputable academic/industry/government organisation.
  • Desirable: A background in statistics and sampling methodology

This is a fixed term position available until 31 October 2025. The work location for this position is AgriBio Bundoora, with hybrid work arrangements available.
