About the Company
North West Constructions Pty Ltd has been a member of the Master Builders Association (NT) since 1973 and has undertaken building and construction work for fifty years (including the major rebuild of Darwin after cyclone Tracy) and is responsible for several iconic buildings in the Darwin and Palmerston regions.
Job Description
The carpenter will be required to work under limited supervision both in the workshop and on-site. The workshop is equipped with timber and metal fabrication equipment and machinery, while work sites are dotted around Darwin and Palmerston.
Some of the items of equipment and machinery in the workshop are:
Mechanical saws (various)
Edge-banding machines
Metal hole punch machines
Dust extracting machines
Air compressors
Oxy-acetylene equipment for welding
Various hand-held power tools for joining, planing, routing and drilling as well as nail guns, angle grinders, solders, etc.
Other plant stored at the workshop and used from time to time includes a forklift, 7-tonne tip truck, cranes and a front-end loader.
The carpenter is expected to be able to use this equipment as required in day-to-day activities.
The carpenter role includes the requirement to keep the workshop safe and clean. This includes, but is not limited to:
Eliminating trip hazards
Cleaning up spills of oils, paints and other slip hazards
Ensuring “test and tag” remains up to date for all power tools and electrical equipment Maintaining machinery in good order, including by adding lubricants as required and arranging servicing of plant and equipment as required
Skills and Duties
The skills and duties of the carpenter are in line with those of a Construction Worker Level 3 (“CW 3”) as set out in the Building & Construction General On-Site Award 2020 (Modern Award MA000020). Specifically, they are set out below, in an extract from the Award:
(b) Skills and duties
(i) An employee at this level performs work to the extent of their skills, competence and training. Employees will acquire skills both formal and informal over time and with experience, and will undertake indicative tasks and duties within the scope of skills they possess.
(ii) An employee at this level may be responsible for the supervision of one or more employees working at CW/ECW 1 or CW/ECW 2 level.
(iii) An employee at this level:
· understands and applies quality control techniques;
· exercises good interpersonal and communication skills;
· exercises measuring and calculation skills at a higher level than CW/ECW 2;
· exercises discretion within the scope of this grade;
· performs work of a trades or non - trades nature which is incidental or peripheral
to the employee's main function and facilitates the completion of the whole task;
· is able to inspect products and/or materials for conformity with established operational standards;
· assists in the provision of on - the - job training;
· understands and applies quality control techniques;
· exercises good interpersonal communication skills;
· exercises discretion within the scope of this grade;
· performs work under limited supervision either individually or in a team environment.
(c) Indicative tasks which an employee may perform at this level include the following:
· allocates functions within a WAT;
· production sequencing and materials handling of a level more advanced than CW/ECW 2;
