About This Opportunity

The Advanced Laboratory Coordinator provides specialist technical support and subject matter expertise in support of high-quality operation of the Sustainable Minerals Institute's Environmental Laboratory.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide technical laboratory support and advise on methods, equipment, quality assurance, risk assessment, and waste management.
  • Assist with training and supervising researchers and students.
  • Prepare, set up, clear away, and/or dispose of chemicals, equipment, and demonstrations.
  • Troubleshoot issues with experiments and equipment.
  • Guide and support students, researchers, and technical staff in projects, testing, and training.
  • Ensure high standards of housekeeping, waste disposal, sample storage, and chemical inventory management.
  • Maintain knowledge of laboratory methodologies and equipment, develop and analyse testing procedures, and perform experiments and generate reports.
  • Maintain, service, repair, and calibrate laboratory equipment, and assist with preparation for external site work.
  • Ensure high standards of occupational health and safety, including risk analysis/mitigation, inductions, supervision, equipment training registers, inventory administration, and reporting/investigating injuries, incidents, and hazards.
  • Monitor compliance with University laboratory requirements, support audit processes and quarantine procedures, and ensure safe design principles are applied to laboratory activities and equipment.
  • Coordinate equipment requests, maintain consumables, manage inventory, ensure audit and maintenance schedules are met, contribute to budget planning and procurement, supervise casual staff, and liaise with clients.
  • Develop and maintain undergraduate laboratory experiments with academic staff, including class preparation, new practicals, and tutor training; assist with distribution and administration of teaching related materials.
  • Assist with preparations for and participate in outreach activities, information sessions, and workshops for schools and external organisations.

About You
  • Completion of a relevant degree in applied chemistry (e.g., soil chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry) with experience in processing environmental samples and managing analytical laboratory facilities.
  • Demonstrated laboratory knowledge and skills encompassing a range of laboratory equipment relevant to soil, plant and water analysis
  • Knowledge of relevant courses and programs of study plus an understanding of the range of research activities performed in the SMI's Environmental Laboratory, or the capability to quickly acquire such knowledge.
  • Advanced knowledge of ICP-OES use and maintenance
  • Expertise in applying sample preparation procedures for chemical analysis of environmental samples (including soil/tailings, plant, and water) and analytical tools/methods.
  • Significant experience of working in dynamic research laboratories with a range of competency levels of laboratory users, particularly postgraduates.
  • Advanced technical capabilities in setting up bench-top experiments for soil, plant, and water research.
  • Detailed knowledge of legislative requirements and operating procedures for major areas of laboratory safety such as quarantine procedures, waste disposal, labelling, and risk assessment.
  • Relevant experience in a laboratory role, preferably in an environmental analysis laboratory environment at a university or similar educational setting, or the capability to quickly acquire this knowledge and apply in the workplace
