This Federal Government department plays a central role in delivering high-profile social policy programs across Australia.

These roles sit within a data hub that acts as the key point of entry for analysis and reporting on a significant national program. The hub supports policy and programme areas through data analysis, reporting, and governance activities, with a focus on transforming how data is used to shape and inform policy advice.

You will report into an experience and personable EL2 with deep policy knowledge and clear vision for the value of data in decision making.

The Opportunity

Multiple roles available (EL1, APS6, APS5) with the most pressing need for an experienced EL1 who can engage with business areas to clarify data needs, shape requests and then either produce the reports or translate to the existing team with significant corporate knowledge of the datasets.

This team produces a combination reports, data projects and outputs that drive informed decision-making including reports going straight to the Secretary.

You will have the chance to build on your expertise as you work across a large, complex data landscape (with over 30 datasets updated monthly), building a deep understanding of the data and helping business areas use it more effectively.

The Role

Due to the growing nature of the data hub team and work flow your role will be varied and may include:

• Scoping and translating business questions into data problems
• Working with business areas to understand exactly what they’re after (i.e. you asked for A but would A, B, and C also be beneficial to you)
• Developing both scheduled and ad hoc reporting across high-demand topics (e.g. participants, spend, service delivery, policy outcomes, NPPs)
• Working with data (raw, complex yet still relatively clean, and consistent) to curate and analyse
• Using SAS for data extraction/transformation and analysis and Excel for dashboards/reporting
• Supporting data governance, including managing dataset definitions and structure
• Building strong relationships across internal and external stakeholders (e.g. high profile consultancies)

The Ideal Person

You’re a technically capable data analyst who can work with imperfect or raw data and translate it into meaningful insights. You enjoy building trust with non-technical stakeholders, helping them understand what the data is really saying, and shaping pragmatic responses to their questions.

This role suits someone who has provided data and reporting to support policy and program decisions.

The go to and established tools for this team are SAS and Excel.

You value strong working relationships, see the bigger picture, and take pride in helping others “do data better.” If you bring a flair for data storytelling or an appreciation for good governance, even better.

At the APS5/6 levels there may be options for more technical analysts however the ability to understand data in a policy context will still be essential.

Salary / Rate

These roles are being offered as either s26 transfers or initial 12 month non-ongoing contracts.

• EL1: $120k - $140k + 15.4% Super
• APS6: $95k- $110k + 15.4% Super

Due to the nature of the work Australian Citizenship and existing security clearance is mandatory.
