Livestock Biosecurity – Biosecurity and Animal Welfare
Full time, ongoing vacancy
Darwin, Northern Territory

Leadership role in livestock biosecurity.

Tertiary qualification in Veterinary Science.

Eligible for registration in the Northern Territory.

Take the next step in your veterinary career by taking the lead in livestock biosecurity across the Territory.

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries was formed in August 2024 to enable agricultural producers to grow their business and the industry. The department underpins the Territory’s reputation as a supplier of safe and quality agricultural produce through scientific research, strong biosecurity practices and compliance with animal welfare legislation.

As the Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer, you hold a senior leadership role within the livestock biosecurity team and are responsible for planning and managing a range of livestock biosecurity projects, which maintain and enhance trade and market access for Northern Territory livestock and livestock products.

Your key duties include leading the biosecurity teams in Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs; providing high-level strategic advice to government executives and industry stakeholders and representing the Territory on national working groups and committees. You also provide leadership in emergency disease and pest animal responses, and act in the role of Chief Veterinary Officer and Chief Inspector of Livestock in their absence.

To be successful you require a relevant tertiary qualification in Veterinary Science, eligibility for registration in the NT and demonstrated experience leading animal health, biosecurity and livestock programs. Strong knowledge of disease surveillance and disease control in livestock and the ability to plan and implement regulatory, research and extension projects is essential. A relevant postgraduate qualification or emergency animal disease response competency is desirable as is experience in the preparation of ministerial briefings and correspondence.

In return, you will receive a competitive salary, 11.5% superannuation, six weeks’ recreation and three weeks’ personal leave, an additional 3 days paid leave over the Christmas shutdown and up to 17.5% annual leave loading. You will also be eligible for flexible work arrangements, career development and the opportunity to develop a rewarding career within the Northern Territory.

This is a great time to consider moving to the Territory. Reward yourself with an enviable lifestyle and a work life balance that allows you time to explore the Territory’s stunning landscapes and waterfalls, enjoy colourful tropical sunsets and spectacular lightning displays, and experience Darwin’s rich multicultural society.
