About the role:
The Deadly Choices Program Lead is responsible for working with the Regional Manager and a designated member of the Aboriginal Community Control Health Service (ACCHS), to market, implement and evaluate programs and activities that will reduce chronic disease factors, leading to smoking cessation, and improving levels of nutrition and physical activity in designated Indigenous communities.
The Deadly Choices Program Lead is supervised by the Manager, Allied Health and receives professional support from the Deadly Choices Regional Manager, Institute for Urban Indigenous Health (IUHI).
The position oversees a team of Program Officers and may work closely with other members of the Primary Health Care and Child Youth and Family Services teams to ensure effective outcomes for clients.
Key responsibilities:
- Program Planning - Work collaboratively with both IUHI Regional Manager, Wuchopperen Allied Health Manager and Program Officers to implement detailed Deadly Choices Action Plans, ensuring quality and effective communication.
- Program Delivery - Coordinate and apply delivery of the Deadly Choices education program, distribute health information, and support participants in making healthy lifestyle choices.
- Management and Coordination - Maintain teams standards, uphold Wuchopperen’s Values, coordinate training and support local events and tobacco stalls.
- Integration - Liaise with Deadly Choices member services, strengthen referral pathways and collaborate on local events and health promotion activities.
- Mentor – Support staff upskilling and provide mentoring to Deadly Choice Program Officers.
- Marketing and Promotions – Work with the Communications and Marketing team to ensure consistent campaign messaging, manage social media plans and collect program feedback and testimonials.
- Gather and record statistical data relevant to measuring performance against agreed indicators and participate in review and evaluation activities.
- Participate in organisational and community activities to advance the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Work within Wuchopperen’s Policies and Procedures including the Staff Code of Conduct and the Work Health and Safety requirements and contribute to continuous improvement processes to ensure compliance with relevant standards and safe, effective service delivery.

- Proven ability to plan, develop, deliver and evaluate health promotion programs to a target group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Demonstrate a strong focus across the target areas through an extensive understanding of the health, social and emotional wellbeing needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures from an historical and contemporary perspective, including the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Proven commitment to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to engage and encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to commit to healthy lifestyle change.
- Extensively developed interpersonal and communication skills including the ability to liaise with a range of stakeholders as well as effectively advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a multi-disciplinary team environment, prioritise and meet deadlines, deal with matters of a sensitive and confidential nature.
- Demonstrated ability to meet and work within the core values and behaviours of Wuchopperen
Qualifications and experience:
- Certificate IV or above in a relevant health prevention qualification (i.e. Certificate IV in Alcohol and Other Drugs, Fitness or equivalent preferred)
Requirements:
- It is a condition of employment in this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), pertussis (whooping cough) and hepatitis B.
- It is recommended for the employee to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
- The Deadly Choices Program Lead is an Identified position. It is a genuine occupational requirement that an Identified position be filled by an Aboriginal person or Torres Strait Islander person, as permitted by and arguable under section 25, 104 and 105 of the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Act (1991).
- It is a condition of employment that all employees are holders of a current and valid ‘blue card’ or Working with Children Check. This is at your cost. Employment cannot continue or commence if you do not have a ‘blue card’ or if your ‘blue card’ is withdrawn or is disqualified.
- Possession of a current CPR certificate or commitment to obtain within the first six weeks of employment is essential.
- Possession of a current Queensland “CA” class driver’s licence is essential.
- Commitment to work within the principles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community control including a willingness to develop the leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.
- Ability to use Microsoft products and the ability to use or willingness to gain proficiency in the client information management systems.
