Job Title: Head Gardener (Horticulture Specialist)
Location: Jimbour House
Reports to: Head of Operations
Job Type: Full-time
Salary: $75,000-85,000 + relocation and rental assistance + company utility vehicle for work use
Start Date: Immediate

Position Overview

We are looking for a knowledgeable and energetic Head Gardener with advanced understanding of horticulture with leadership skills to manage, develop and maintain the formal grounds and gardens of Historic Jimbour House. The successful applicant will have a sound horticultural knowledge and a proven employment record in maintaining all aspects of high-end gardens. As Head Gardener you will lead a team of ground staff, ensuring the gardens reflect the highest horticultural and aesthetic standards across the entire property.

This is a fantastic career opportunity for an experienced dedicated gardener to be part of the maintenance and development of the gardens and grounds of one of Queensland’s most significant historic properties.

Qualifications & Skills

Education & Experience

A degree or certification in Horticulture, Botany, Plant Science, or a related field is preferred.

A minimum of 10 years of professional horticultural experience, with at least 5 years in a supervisory or leadership role.

Expertise in a wide range of plants, including ornamental, edible, and rare species.

Proven experience in designing and maintaining diverse garden landscapes and plant collections.

Technical Skills

Proficiency with horticultural tools and machinery, including mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, and irrigation systems.

Strong knowledge of soil science, pest and disease management, and plant propagation techniques.

Advanced knowledge of plant nutrition, plant health, and environmental factors affecting plant growth.

Personal Attributes

Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

Strong problem-solving ability, with a practical, hands-on approach to plant care and garden maintenance.

High attention to detail, with a passion for maintaining exceptional plant health and aesthetic quality.

Ability to work in all weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands: The role requires physical stamina to lift heavy items, perform manual gardening tasks, and use equipment. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions is essential.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 38 hours, with flexibility to accommodate seasonal changes, events, or early/late hours depending on horticultural needs.
