Lead Design Engineer - Overhead Cranes
TNC Cranes
Posted 4 days ago
TNC Cranes is undergoing a major transformation. After two decades of supplying and maintaining imported overhead cranes, we are now designing and manufacturing them here in Australia – from the ground up.
This is not a traditional engineering role. It is a greenfield leadership opportunity to build an entire design and production capability from scratch. No legacy systems. No outdated workflows. No existing infrastructure. You will be responsible for designing the product and the systems used to build it.
If you are an experienced engineer ready to lead, innovate, and create – this is your chance to define the engineering future of an Australian-made crane brand with national potential.
About the Role
As our first dedicated Design Engineer, you will have full responsibility for developing the technical backbone of our new manufacturing operation. You’ll work closely with company leadership to build not only the cranes we produce – but also the digital design tools, automation workflows, manufacturing protocols, and internal engineering standards that support a scalable and intelligent product range.
We are not just building cranes. We are creating a modern, lean, and tech-enabled manufacturing system that incorporates the best of structural engineering, mechatronics, and smart diagnostics.
Key Responsibilities
Product Development & Design Engineering
Engineer overhead crane systems from a blank slate, including girders, end carriages, hoists, and structural supports.
Perform detailed structural analysis, load calculations, and compliance reviews under AS1418 and related Australian standards.
Produce manufacturing-ready 3D models, drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation.
Engineering Infrastructure Creation
Establish the internal engineering ecosystem from scratch: design workflows, document templates, QA systems, calculation tools, software automation, and digital records management.
Build calculation models using Excel VBA or other platforms to automate internal engineering tasks and enable design scalability.
Develop a design-for-manufacture framework that ensures efficiency, repeatability, and traceability.
Manufacturing and Warehouse Automation
Design the crane, but also help design how the crane is built.
Collaborate with management and fabrication teams to map out production flows, equipment needs, workstation layouts, jigs, fixtures, and warehouse logistics.
Recommend and integrate smart warehouse technologies such as barcode tracking, automated part handling, or CNC programming systems to improve build speed and accuracy.
Technology & Innovation Integration
Drive integration of AI-based remote diagnostics, smart sensors, and data monitoring into crane systems in collaboration with our technology division.
Champion a future-ready design approach that blends mechanical reliability with digital intelligence.
Cross-Functional Leadership
Serve as the technical lead across departments: fabrication, project management, procurement, service, and sales.
Guide product roadmap discussions and long-term development strategy.
Contribute to hiring and mentoring future engineering and drafting personnel.
Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering.
Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in crane design or heavy structural equipment engineering.
In-depth understanding of AS1418 and applicable structural and mechanical codes.
CPEng or RPEQ accreditation, or the ability to attain it.
Technical Competencies
Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor or equivalent).
FEA and structural analysis skills.
Ability to create or customise engineering automation tools (Excel VBA, Python, MATLAB, or equivalent).
Experience working closely with or inside a fabrication/manufacturing environment.
Personal Attributes
Entrepreneurial engineering mindset: proactive, solutions-oriented, and comfortable with ambiguity.
Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical teams.
Practical, workshop-aware approach to design.
Passion for innovation, smart systems, and improving how things are done.
What We Offer
A Blank Slate and a Big Opportunity – There are no legacy systems or constraints. You will define how the product is designed, how it’s built, and how the factory operates.
Negotiable Salary – Starting from $180K, with flexibility for candidates bringing strong experience in Australian crane or structural equipment design.
Relocation & Housing Assistance – Comprehensive support for your move to Emerald, QLD.
Innovation-Driven Culture – We are investing in AI, robotics, and digital infrastructure. You will lead how those technologies connect to the physical product.
Long-Term Growth Pathway – Be part of something foundational. As the business grows, your role can evolve into a senior leadership or director-level position.
Regional Lifestyle Advantage – Enjoy an affordable cost of living, work-life balance, and a connected community in the heart of Central Queensland.
