Principal Embedded Systems Engineer

SUMMARY
Are you an experienced hardware engineer passionate about creating life-saving medical devices? My client is looking for a Senior Electronics Engineer to join a close-knit, highly capable team developing world-class cardiac stimulation technology. This is a rare opportunity to play a key technical role in a high-impact field, designing systems that directly interface with the human heart.

The product is a cardiac stimulator, essentially a portable pacemaker used in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. It is a high-risk, highly regulated Class IIB medical device capable of inducing lethal arrhythmias, so your engineering work has real consequences and must meet the highest standards.

You’ll be joining a stable and highly skilled cross-functional team that includes software, mechanical, production, test, and quality engineers. What I'm looking for is someone who can take the lead on electronic design.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

As the most senior electronics designer on the team, you will:

Lead the design of biomedical analogue and embedded digital circuits for intra-cardiac ECG, pacing, and defibrillation devices.

Take ownership of schematic capture, BOM generation, and PCBA specification using Altium Designer (v18 or later).

Integrate hardware with embedded firmware and custom software in a distributed embedded system.

Support transfer to manufacturing and liaise with production and test engineers.

Rapidly prototype and debug hardware using standard lab tools.

Collaborate with software, test, QA, and regulatory teams in a semi-agile environment.

Produce documentation that meets ISO13485 QMS and ISO14971 risk management standards.

Conduct root cause analysis, contribute to risk assessments, and participate in structured design reviews.

Mentor and support junior hardware engineers as a technical leader.

REQUIREMENTS

Must-Haves:

Absolute minimum of 5+ years’ experience in a highly regulated industry (medical device experience strongly preferred)

Strong knowledge of PCBA design and embedded hardware systems

Familiarity with ISO13485 QMS, ISO14971 risk management, and IEC60601 electrical safety standards

Experience with Altium Designer (v18 or later)

Cross-functional industry experience, working closely with SW, QA, and test teams

Practical understanding of firmware/software integration

Comfortable in a small company, agile environment

Strong technical communication and documentation skills

Not Suitable For:

Academics or researchers without commercial product design experience

Engineers from unrelated fields (e.g. mining, rail, power, chip design)
