Our Mission is to understand and be responsive to community needs to provide high-impact programs, services and support to both the muscular dystrophy and other related neuromuscular disease communities and to fund innovative research.
MDA represents the needs of more than 40,000 people living with one of 40 different types of NMD, which affect muscle strength. The support and services we provide use evidence-based and consumer-informed approaches to optimise the lived experience of NMD.

Purpose of the position
The Finance and Operations Manager will support the CEO in overseeing financial and business operations across MDA. This role includes assisting in the preparation of reports for the Board and relevant committees by collaborating with department heads to compile and report financial and operational performance. In addition, this role will support identifying headwinds and opportunities for performance and process improvement across MDA operations, objectives of this role include:
· Finance leadership through managing the accounting & finance operations to deliver accurate and meaningful reporting of financial results.
· Partnering with the Senior leadership team in all financial, data and commercial aspects by capturing, substantiating and analysing operational performance for management and financial reporting.
· Financial support to Senior Leadership team to develop plans that support organisational strategy
· Operational leadership across the organisation to ensure service delivery and fundraising activities
· Risk management and mitigation through maintaining adequate controls across Finance, operations and IT.
· Adherence to all appropriate quality and regulatory standards, including ATO, ACNC and ASIC
· Delivery of research funding grant reporting (incl. government) and acquittals.
· Ensure the organisation operates in an ethical, compliant, transparent and innovative manner.
· Actively engaged in Muscular Dystrophy Australia’s strategic plan
· Streamline and optimise Finance and Operational functions, including payroll and FBT
· Support the development of business growth strategies.
The ideal candidate should possess strong analytical skills, extensive accounting experience including budget and forecast development, exceptional problem-solving skills, be highly organised, and have excellent collaboration skills with people from multiple disciplines.
Responsibilities and Key Performance Areas
Finance
● Lead the preparation of monthly financial results & management reports
● Drive robust annual budget and periodic forecast processes
● Monitoring of monthly performance
● Overseeing audit and tax functions
● Manage payroll, salary packaging and FBT (we use employment hero)
● GST, PAYG and superannuation lodgments payments
● Establishing and monitoring internal controls and procedures.
● Analyse costs, pricing, variable contributions and actual performance compared to forecasts
/ business plans
● Economic modelling
● Leadership and people management skills including the ability to work with a dynamic leadership team.
● Strategic outlook and the ability to plan effectively for the future in relation to the purpose of the position as outlined.
● Flexibility and adaptability including the ability to multi-task, work within an ambiguous, fast-moving and changing environment.

Operations
Manage operational responsibilities of the organisation:
● Oversee Insurances, cyber security, identify and manage financial, IT and operational risks across the organisation, responsible for the risk register and compliance calendar
● Contract management
● Work with external IT providers to develop and implement the organisational technology strategy.
● Oversee development of detailed business case for supports, evaluate growth opportunities
● Ensure the financial, accounting, IT and operations policies, procedures, principles and practices for the organisation are in line with legal and corporate requirements, including ATO business regulations, including BAS reporting, FBT, GST, SGC and superannuation payments, WorkCover, Portable Long Service leave, and all not-for-profit organisation business rules
● Undertake high level administrative duties in the organisation, insurance policy and risk management, preparation and distribution of Board Meeting papers, attendance at and contribution to Board Meetings
● Design and update of written policies and procedures as required
● Ad hoc projects and tasks as they arise
Functional and behavioral duties and requirements of the role
The successful candidate will have experience working within a professional services accounting firm, and ideally a not-for-profit organisation and/or health and medical research organisation and be able to demonstrate:
● Demonstrated experience in successfully dealing with suppliers, donors and funders.
● Demonstrated financial management capability.
● Demonstrated project management capability.
● Clear client service vision and able to champion cross functional operations.
● Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate with business disciplines
● Proficiency in accounting software, particularly MYOB, employment hero, Salesforce
● Able to establish, manage, guide and lead employees to ensure appropriate financial processes and reporting are being used
● A solid understanding of financial statistics and accounting principles
Qualifications and technical requirements:
Tertiary qualification in Business or Finance; CPA or CA qualified
4-5+ years’ management and financial accounting experience
Intermediate Microsoft excel skills
Coordinate, prepare and write board and management reports as required.
Excellent analytical, communication and presentation skills.
Experience in diverse teams, preferably in the delivery of fundraising, programs and services.
NDIS worker ID or a Satisfactory Police Records Check* and Working with Children Check*
Right to work within Australia *Note: costs of obtaining PRC and WWC will be met by the applicant.
Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively partner and collaborate with various business disciplines
Proficiency in accounting software, particularly MYOB and supporting platforms - employment hero, Salesforce
Ability to develop businesses cases to deliver/drive business growth
Coordinate, prepare and write reports as required.
Working knowledge of the NDIS
Board reporting
