Are you an experienced environmental or offshore sector professional ready to apply your technical expertise to important national policy work? We're seeking a highly skilled EL1-level Technical Expert to join our Sea Dumping Operational Policy team, supporting Australia's environmental regulation efforts.

Location: Flexible Australia-wide (WFH or Capital City Office Available)
Contract Term: 12 months (1 July 2025 – 30 June 2026) with a 12-month extension option
Security Clearance: Baseline clearance preferred (or ability to obtain)
Travel: May be required for stakeholder engagement or conferences

About the role
You’ll play a lead technical role in the development and delivery of operational policy and guidance for emerging areas under the Sea Dumping Act — with a key focus on offshore carbon capture and sequestration. This role does not involve supervising staff, but requires a strong capacity for leadership in projects, high-level advice and technical communication.Key Responsibilities

  • Offshore oil and gas decommissioning
  • Contaminant management within sea dumping regulations
  • Lead the development of guidance materials for new permit categories, especially related to offshore carbon capture and sequestration.
  • Provide expert technical advice and input into policy projects on:
  • Support environmental impact assessments for permit applications.
  • Advise on offshore oil and gas operations, technologies and permitting processes.
  • Engage with stakeholders and contribute to policy development and regulation.

Ideal Candidate

  • Technical knowledge in the offshore oil and gas sector, marine/environmental science, or environmental management.
  • Experience with or ability to interpret technical and regulatory frameworks related to sea dumping and offshore environmental impacts.

General Skills and requirements

  • Autonomous, proactive and outcomes-focused.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information for varied audiences.
  • Sound project management and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • A working understanding of (or ability to quickly learn) government operations and regulation.
  • Baseline security clearance preferred, or ability to obtain one.
  • Willingness to travel when necessary for stakeholder meetings or events.
