As a responsible corporate citizen, we continuously seek new ways to broaden our participation in the environmental sector, ensuring that our future is as bright, safe, and secure as at any time in our long history.
Are you looking to combine your interest in sales/account management, and hands-on work in a role that offers real growth? The Trading Cadet Program at Sims Metal offers you the best of both worlds. This isn't just a behind-the-desk role—it's about diving into the dynamic industry of metal recycling, where you'll rotate through different areas of the business while honing your relationship management skills.
Whether you have experience in sales or account management—or you're excited to get your foot in the door—this is your chance to learn and grow in a thriving, supportive environment. With rotations through key business areas like Trading, Operations, Transport, Weighbridge, Finance, and Admin, this program provides a solid foundation for a successful career.
What's in It for You?
- Hands-on learning: You'll rotate through key functions in the business, gaining practical experience that balances commercial savvy with operations.
- Sales and account management focus: Learn how to build trusted relationships with customers, solve real-world challenges, and drive business growth with purpose and confidence.
- Diverse business exposure: From handling logistics and weighbridge duties to working closely with customers and suppliers, you'll get a comprehensive understanding of the business.
- Mentorship: You'll be supported by managers and mentors who are invested in your growth and committed to helping you succeed.
- Clear career pathway/progression: Upon successful completion of the program, you will have the opportunity to progress into an Associate Trading Representative role — a key role in our trading team that includes a company vehicle and work phone as tools of trade.
What You'll Be Doing
As a Trading Cadet, you'll rotate across various areas of the business, including:
- Operations: Learn how scrap is received, processed, and prepared for trade.
- Trading & Customer Relations: Develop expertise in buying, selling, and trading metals, managing customer portfolios, and growing your sales skills.
- Transport & Weighbridge: Dive into the logistics side of the business, understanding how we move materials and manage weights for trading accuracy.
- Finance & Admin: Gain insight into the financial side, supporting trading decisions and understanding the administrative backbone of the business.
- Safety & Sustainability: Ensure every task aligns with safety and environmental practices, key to everything we do.
Who We're Looking For
We're looking for driven, curious people who are ready to grow their careers and make an impact. You don't need to have all the answers or loads of experience. If you're willing to learn and get involved, we'll support you every step of the way.
If this sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you:
- Interested in sales, account management, and trading—and not afraid to get hands-on with operations.
- Open to learning and developing new skills, with strong communication and relationship-building abilities.
- Committed to safety and keen on making a difference through sustainable practices.
- Focused on building a long-term career in a fast-paced, evolving industry.
