Nestled in the lush, tropical surrounds of Fannie Bay in Darwin’s Top End, the Darwin Turf Club/Silks is famed for the running of the Great Northern Darwin Cup, the crescendo of an eight-day dry season carnival. With 39 race days a year, the trackside action happens all year round. Silks is a membership-based local community club including a bistro, gaming room, sports bar, and a few conference & events spaces around the business overlooking the race ground.

About the role

The Darwin Turf Club & Silks is looking for an experienced and proactive People & Culture Manager to lead and enhance key human resources functions. This strategic leadership role will be pivotal in shaping recruitment efforts, policy development, compliance, employee engagement, performance management, work health & safety, and industrial relations. The People & Culture Manager will work closely with departmental managers to ensure the effective implementation of HR strategies across the organisation, fostering a positive and productive workplace culture.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee end-to-end recruitment for casual and permanent roles, including advertising, interviewing, onboarding, and induction.

Ensure HR policies and procedures are up-to-date, legislatively compliant, and aligned with best practices.

Collaborate with management to communicate and implement HR policies across the organisation.

Lead organisational development programs focused on succession planning, workforce development, retention, and change management.

Manage performance systems, including probation reviews, annual appraisals, performance improvement plans, and employee recognition.

Provide guidance on interpreting modern awards and legislation in line with company needs.

Manage workers' compensation claims and ensure compliance with Work Health & Safety regulations.

Ensure compliance with Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) and Responsible Service of Gambling (RSG) requirements.

Develop, implement, and maintain the remuneration framework for salaried employees in consultation with the Chief Executive Officer.

Manage employee disciplinary processes, including investigations, terminations, and meetings, and represent the Darwin Turf Club in Fair Work Commission claims.

Maintain the organisation’s HRIS and payroll system (Employment Hero).

Essential Qualifications & Experience

Bachelor’s degree in HR, Business Administration, or a related field.

At least three years’ experience in an HR management role.

Experience managing large casual and seasonal workforces.

Strong communication, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills.

Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.

Ability to prioritise, delegate, and act with integrity and professionalism.

In-depth knowledge of employment law and regulations.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and HRIS systems (e.g., Employment Hero).
