The Role

The acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is an historic and transformative endeavour for Australia. The whole-of-nation effort to safely and securely deliver the cutting edge nuclear-powered submarine program will transform Australia’s economic and national security landscape for decades to come.

The Chief Risk Officer is responsible for advising and supporting the Australian Submarine agency in achieving a positive risk culture.

Key duties will include:

  • Advise the ASA Executive Team on risk management matters, including guiding and influencing risk based decisions
  • Work with the ASA Executive Team to identify, measure and evaluate all key current, emerging and future risks.
  • Steward and improve the ASA Risk Management System
  • Support the ASA Executive Team to influence ASA culture, including providing objective advice and assurance on the performance and behaviours of people, processes and systems.
  • Lead and Manage the ASA risk management framework intergrated project team.

Our ideal candidates will bring the following attributes and skills to the role:

  • Ability to lead, maintain, assure and improve the risk framework for the ASA to ensure it remains fit for purpose.
  • Ability to effectively influence, promote and communicate with senior ASA executives and governance boards on risk matters
  • Possesses both broad and deep experience in the management of major acquisition and sustainment programs.
  • Advise on the design and operational effectiveness of key controls for ASA risks model and monitor the expected behaviours for risk taking in the ASA, as articulated by the accountable authority
  • Identify, promote and support the development of the capabilities needed to ensure that risks are managed effectively across the ASA, including training, assurance and resources.
  • Implement appropriate training and awareness programs to build the capability of officials to appropriately manage risk.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a diverse group of ADF, APS and contractors to achieve ASA objectives.
