Youth Assistance Program Officer – Join Us in Making a Difference

Are you passionate about supporting young people to reach their potential? We’re looking for a dedicated Youth Assistance Program (YAP) Officer to help at-risk youth (15-18 years) stay engaged in education, gain employment, and build essential life skills.

ABOUT THE ROLE:

As a YAP Officer, you will provide tailored support to young people at risk of disengaging from school. Your role will involve:
✔️ Short-term case management (up to 3 months)
✔️ Assisting with form completion and transport
✔️ Facilitating group programs
✔️ Supporting budgeting and other essential life skills
✔️ Connecting young people to further education, training, and employment opportunities

You will work closely with local service networks and maximise existing community resources to help young people achieve their goals.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop single case plans in collaboration with participants, focusing on their educational and employment goals.
  • Facilitate small group programs on essential skills (e.g., budgeting, tenancy), in partnership with local organisations.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary support to address complex participant needs, guiding them to appropriate services.
  • Maintain effective communication and engagement to ensure cohesive support throughout participants’ journeys.
  • Support up to 40 participants at a time, connecting them to further education and employment pathways.

ABOUT YOU
You’re a motivated and empathetic individual passionate about empowering young people. With a strong understanding of the challenges facing vulnerable youth, you have the skills to foster positive outcomes through effective case management and targeted skills development. Your experience in engaging with local employers and collaborating with service providers positions you as a key resource in helping young people thrive.

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • SC1: Demonstrated ability to provide interventions, including mediation, case management, and life and employment skills training, tailored to vulnerable young people.
  • SC2: Proven experience in building relationships with employers to create employment opportunities for participants.
  • SC3: Experience in developing and managing partnerships with local organisations to deliver impactful support for vulnerable community members.
  • SC4: Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, report writing, and conflict resolution.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Essential:

  • Extensive knowledge of the needs and issues of vulnerable young people.
  • Superior Human Relation Skills and good computer skills.
  • Group facilitation and training experience.
  • Drivers Licence.
  • Working with Children Suitability Card & Police Check.
  • Certificate IV in Community Services, Youth Work or similar.

Desirable

  • Degree or higher tertiary qualification in Human Services would be preferable.

The Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre was founded 1989 as a community-based initiative to provide help, friendship and support to the most disenfranchised people in the community. The emphasis of all of our activities is on people and the relief of issues and concerns that impede them from living a successful and happy life.

We develop and deliver programs and services in response to community need. Presently, the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre manages 30 funded programs that encompass aspects of aged care, family services, diversity and social isolation.
