About the role
This role is responsible for providing legal advice and insights to the Hospitality and Racing Division (H&R) of the Department. H&R are responsible for administering legislation related to liquor, gaming machines, casinos, online and retail wagering, thoroughbred racing and greyhound racing, amongst others.
The role may have the opportunity to work on legislative reform in those areas at a time where cashless gaming and the racing codes are subject to Parliamentary scrutiny. The role is likely to provide legal services in relation to three main streams being either:
- Conducting prosecutions
- Administrative law and legislative reform advice
- Commercial Agreements and contractual matters

About You
Experience in communicating your legal advice and counsel and operational advice to stakeholders showcasing valuable outcomes for the department will be a must to be successful in this role.
You have experience managing multiple and diverse legal projects, whilst ensuring minimum risk to the department. Developing clear and concise training documents for our stakeholders to assist in engaging with the legal team and broader awareness will also be highly regarded.
In addition, our ideal candidate will have at-least one of the following demonstrated experience or skillset in:
- Litigation - criminal or civil;
- Commercial law;
- Administrative law;
- Experience in the policy making and legislative process
You do not need to be an expert in all of these areas of law. However, a willingness to develop your skills and experience in areas in which you are less confident, is essential.
You must be admitted or qualified for admission as a Solicitor or Barrister in the Supreme Court of NSW and hold, or be eligible to hold, a NSW Practising Certificate. For any questions related to the role, please contact Andrew James, Deputy General Counsel, via [email protected].
