Your company

The organisation is an Australian Government-owned Commonwealth Corporate Entity which plays a vital role in managing critical infrastructure and providing services to industry. The organisation is engaged in transformational, multi-billion-dollar programs and is looking for a highly skilled and committed senior corporate legal counsel to support these critical, nation-building works.

Your role
As a Senior Legal Counsel, reporting to the General Counsel, you will be a key advisor at the heart of a generational transformation program, providing expert legal advice on complex, high-value IT and services contracts integral to national infrastructure. This role demands an experienced legal professional with the technical expertise to navigate large-scale procurement processes and the commercial acumen to manage the risks and nuances of major projects and partnerships.

You will need to be a highly strategic, resilient individual who thrives in demanding, high-volume work environments, where sound legal judgment and commercial understanding are key to the success of the organisation's objectives. You will work autonomously as the senior legal advisor on the program, as well as collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. You will demonstrate leadership and integrity in your work and engagement with others and strive always to preserve the organisation's interests.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Draft, review and vary large-scale, complex IT and services contracts and provide timely and accurate legal advice in relation to the delivery of a significant technology program.
  • Assess, manage, and mitigate legal risks associated with critical procurement programs, ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and best practices in contract management.
  • Advise on the management of contracts and contract management issues and lead the organisation's resolution of high-stakes commercial legal disputes and settlement negotiations as required.
  • Build and maintain strong and trusted working relationships with internal stakeholders and external stakeholders and instruct and manage external legal providers to ensure cost-effective and efficient delivery of legal services.
  • Perform the role of Senior Legal Counsel with integrity, objectivity and independence, consistent with the obligations of a legal practitioner and demonstrate an understanding of the additional obligations of working for a Corporate Commonwealth entity.

What you'll need to succeed

  • Tertiary qualifications in law with a minimum of 10 years' post-qualification experience (PQE), ideally in commercial law with a focus on large-scale IT and procurement projects
  • Admitted as a legal practitioner in Australia with a current Practising Certificate
  • Ability to hold and retain suitable security clearances
  • Proven expertise in complex commercial contracting, with a strong background in IT procurement, large-scale services agreements, and government contracts
  • Exceptional legal technical skills, including outstanding drafting abilities and a capacity to think critically and creatively when addressing legal and commercial challenges
  • Strong commercial acumen and a track record of successfully navigating complex, high-stakes negotiations and risk management in a commercial context.
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to distil complex legal issues into clear, actionable advice for non-legal stakeholders

    What you'll get in return
  • The opportunity to be a key legal advisor on one of Australia's most critical infrastructure projects
  • Work with a high-performing, collegiate legal team
  • Competitive salary and benefits package, with a focus on rewarding exceptional legal expertise and contributions
  • Ongoing professional development and the opportunity to grow in a dynamic, transformative organisation
