Your Role in Our Team

Barcaldine Regional Council is looking for a full-time Water/Wastewater Coordinator based in the Barcaldine Region, QLD.

Reporting to the Director of Works, this role is responsible for overseeing water and wastewater operations, ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards, and managing infrastructure, resources, and staff to maintain clean drinking water supply and effective wastewater treatment across the region.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing water and wastewater staff, resources, and infrastructure
  • Ensuring compliance with licensing, statutory requirements, and environmental regulations
  • Managing repairs, maintenance, and asset functionality for water and wastewater installations
  • Assisting in budget preparation and monitoring expenditure to stay within budget parameters
  • Conducting risk assessments and maintaining detailed compliance records
  • Responding to emergency water and sewerage situations, including after-hours and during extreme weather events
  • Managing and updating the Drinking Water Quality Management Plan (DWQMP)
  • Liaising with regulatory bodies and providing technical advice to stakeholders
  • Leading and supervising water and wastewater treatment operators and plumbing teams
  • Facilitating workforce development through on-the-job training and professional development
  • Ensuring workplace safety through adherence to policies and best practices
  • Engaging with the community and council to identify needs and improvements
Are You the Right Fit?

To qualify, you will need a Plumbing Licence or a Certificate III in Water Operations (or higher). A minimum of five years of experience in water/wastewater treatment plant operations in a supervisory role will also be essential. Additionally, you must have a Queensland Class ‘C’ Driver Licence and a General Construction Induction Card (White/Blue Card).

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Extensive knowledge of water and wastewater treatment processes, including activated sludge treatment and disinfection
  • Experience preparing operational compliance reports and correspondence for local, state, and federal authorities
  • Strong understanding of preventive maintenance procedures for wastewater treatment plants
  • Proficiency in using email, word documents, and spreadsheets for reporting and communication
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote environment and supervise teams across multiple locations

As our ideal candidate, you will possess strong leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, with the ability to supervise staff, manage projects, and ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations. You will be proactive, adaptable, and capable of responding to emergency situations, including after-hours incidents.

This is a critical leadership role that requires a hands-on professional with technical expertise, attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering safe and sustainable water and wastewater services for regional communities.
